What is the difference between Databricks Architect vs Data Engineer?

AspectDatabricks ArchitectData Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning and implementing data solutions on Databricks platformBuilding, maintaining, and optimizing data pipelines and infrastructure
Skills & CertificationsDatabricks certifications, Spark, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), SQLSQL, ETL tools, cloud platforms, programming (Python, Scala)
Work EnvironmentData platforms, cloud environments, collaboration with data teamsData pipelines, databases, cloud infrastructure, scripting

While both roles work with data and cloud platforms, a Databricks Architect primarily focuses on designing and implementing data solutions using Databricks, whereas a Data Engineer builds and maintains the data pipelines and infrastructure that support these solutions. The Architect often oversees the technical design, while the Engineer handles the day-to-day pipeline development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Databricks Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Databricks Architect, you need strong expertise in big data engineering, cloud platforms (such as Azure or AWS), distributed computing, and proficiency in languages like Python or Scala, typically supported by a relevant degree and cloud certifications. Familiarity with Databricks Workspace, Apache Spark, Delta Lake, and CI/CD tools is crucial for designing and implementing scalable data solutions. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills set top performers apart by enabling effective collaboration and solution delivery. These competencies are essential for architecting reliable, high-performance data platforms that drive business insights and innovation.

What are some common challenges Databricks Architects face when designing large-scale data solutions?

Databricks Architects often encounter challenges such as optimizing cluster performance for cost and efficiency, ensuring data security and compliance across distributed environments, and integrating Databricks with legacy systems or diverse data sources. They must carefully design data pipelines and workflows to handle large volumes of data without bottlenecks, and also collaborate closely with data engineers, data scientists, and IT teams to align on best practices. Staying updated with evolving Databricks features and cloud platform updates is also essential for success in this dynamic role.

What is a Databricks Architect?

A Databricks Architect is an IT professional who designs, implements, and manages data solutions using the Databricks platform, which is built on Apache Spark. They are responsible for creating scalable data pipelines, optimizing data workflows, and ensuring security and compliance within the cloud environment. Databricks Architects often work closely with data engineers, data scientists, and business stakeholders to deliver robust analytics solutions that drive business insights. Their expertise helps organizations leverage big data technologies efficiently and effectively.

Job description

Zions Bancorporation's Enterprise Technology and Operations (ETO) team is transforming what it means to work for a financial institution. With a commitment to technology and innovation, we have been providing our community, clients, and colleagues the best experience possible for over 150 years. Help us transform our workforce of the future, today.
We are seeking a Sr. Solutions Architect (Databricks) to join Zions Bancorporation. This Sr. Solutions Architect will be passionate about data with both solution architecture and hands-on Databricks engineering skills. Initially, this will be a hybrid role in which the individual will architect and help teams build their Databricks data processing pipelines, with the goal of teaching and mentoring them to be self-sufficient. As these capabilities are established, the responsibilities for this position will progressively shift toward less hands-on execution and transition into a traditional architecture role.
This Sr. Solutions Architect (Databricks) will be instrumental in implementing state-of-the-art analytics solutions, and assisting with the migration of on-premises solutions (e.g., Data Warehouse, Data Lakes, ODSs) to Databricks. This position is critical in establishing a solid foundation for data management within our organization, ensuring that data is organized, accessible, secure, governed, and aligned with business objectives. If you're passionate about data and eager to make a significant impact, we want to hear from you!
The Sr. Solutions Architect (Databricks) will:
  • Help establish a cloud-based data management platform (focusing on Databricks) that supports the Medallion Architecture and integrates operational processes, data integration, data warehousing, business intelligence, and advanced analytics (e.g., AI/ML).
  • Lead and mentor engineering teams by working side-by-side to help develop robust solutions and providing guidance on best practices for processing, storing, and accessing data in the cloud
  • Define and implement migration strategies to modernize existing data-centric solutions in the cloud, coaching teams through the transformation process
  • Ensure alignment to established standards, principles, patterns, guidelines, security and processes critical for successful cloud adoption and proper governance
  • Partner with Data and AI architects to influence architectural patterns and best practices, and actively apply them in solution design
  • Translate business requirements into technical solutions, collaborating closely with product owners and managers to ensure successful implementation throughout the product lifecycle
  • Develop future state roadmaps for products and technologies that align with and enable business objectives, ensuring a clear vision for data evolution
  • Evaluate and strategically integrate emerging technologies for data management, storage, analytics, and related tools, contributing to future-state architectural decisions

Qualifications:
  • Databricks proficiency: Strong, hands-on experience using the Databricks platform and its tools like Delta Lake, Delta Live Tables, Databricks SQL, etc.
  • Cloud platform expertise: Proven experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or another major provider like AWS or Azure
  • Data & Engineering Practices:Hands-on experience with data pipelines (Python, Spark, ETL/ELT, APIs) and modern agile practices, including CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and automated testing.
  • Data-centric solutions: At least 3-5 years of direct experience in implementing and developing data-centric solutions such as Data Lakes, Operational Data Stores, and Data Warehouses using industry best-practice architectural patterns
  • Solution Architecture:Practical experience working within an Enterprise Architecture framework. Requires a solid understanding of architecture principles and patterns gained through direct application or close collaboration, paired with a desire to grow into a full-time architectural role.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create clear architectural documentation and effectively convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, including engineers, managers, and project stakeholders.
  • Educational background: Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field and 8+ years of relatable IT experience. A combination of education and experience may meet requirements.
  • Problem-solving skills: Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-resolution skills related to information architecture concepts that support well-architected and integrated transactional, analytical, and collaborative systems.
  • Financial industry experience: Banking or other Financial Services experience is a plus.

Location:
This position has a hybrid work from home schedule with a minimum of three days per week in the office at the new Zions Technology Center in Midvale, UT.
The Zions Technology Center is a 400,000-square-foot technology campus in Midvale, Utah. • Access to outdoor recreation, parks, trails, shareable bikes and locker rooms.
  • Large modern cafe with a healthy and diverse menu.
  • Healthy indoor environment with ample natural light and fresh air.
  • LEED-certified sustainable building that features include the use of low VOC-emitting construction materials.
