What are Social Security Disability benefits?

Social Security Disability benefits are financial assistance programs provided by the U.S. government to individuals who are unable to work due to a qualifying disability. There are two main types: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which is based on your work history and contributions to Social Security, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is need-based and does not require a work history. To qualify, you must have a medical condition that meets the Social Security Administration's definition of disability and is expected to last at least one year or result in death. The application process involves providing detailed medical and work history information and can take several months to complete.

What are good jobs for people with disabilities?

Social Security Disability recipients can consider jobs that match their abilities, such as remote work, data entry, customer service, or administrative roles, which often require minimal physical strain. How much can you make working on Social Security disability?

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) has a monthly earnings limit, which for 2023 is $1,470 for non-blind individuals and $2,460 for blind individuals. If you earn more than these amounts, your benefits may be reduced or suspended, but you can work and still receive some benefits through work incentives programs that allow for trial work periods and extended eligibility while earning income.

To thrive as a Social Security Disability Specialist, you need a strong understanding of Social Security regulations, disability law, and case management, often supported by a relevant degree or experience in social services or law. Familiarity with case management software, government databases, and electronic filing systems is typically required. Compassion, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for advocating for clients and navigating complex cases. These competencies are essential to efficiently guide applicants through the disability process and ensure fair, accurate outcomes.
