Position Overview Section
The Simulation Operator provides technical expertise and operational support for high-fidelity medical simulation systems in support of the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) Team Training Program. This position supports simulation-based medical education, research, and operational training by operating advanced patient simulators, audiovisual systems, and learning management technologies while assisting with curriculum development, performance evaluation, and simulation program improvement.
Essential Job Functions
  • Operate, program, and troubleshoot high-fidelity human patient simulators, task trainers, and virtual reality procedural trainers.
  • Prepare, operate, and recover simulation environments and equipment for scheduled training events.
  • Support simulation-based education using learning management systems (LMS) and audiovisual technologies to monitor, record, and evaluate learner performance.
  • Conduct orientations on simulation equipment, training environments, and human patient simulator capabilities.
  • Assist with the design, programming, implementation, and evaluation of simulation scenarios.
  • Collect, analyze, and track simulation performance data using standardized evaluation tools to assess learner and team performance.
  • Assist in the development, validation, and administration of simulation training metrics and outcome measures.
  • Support simulation research activities within the scope of the program.
  • Develop simulation lesson plans, troubleshooting guides, maintenance procedures, and operational checklists.
  • Provide technical support for digital video recording systems and maintain simulation equipment and associated technologies.
  • Collaborate with program leadership, curriculum developers, IT personnel, medical logistics, and simulation center staff to identify operational needs and recommend program improvements.
  • Assist the Program Course Director with simulation scenario reviews and course development.
  • Develop training, safety, and maintenance materials related to simulation equipment.
  • Participate in strategic planning meetings, teleconferences, and operational planning activities.
  • Provide consultation regarding simulation center expansion and recommendations for future simulation technologies.
  • Ensure simulation activities support course objectives, learning outcomes, and skill sustainment requirements.
  • Monitor equipment inventories and report supply and maintenance requirements.
  • Assist with train-the-trainer activities and provide basic technical instruction to simulation cadre.
  • Participate in operational exercises supporting Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCAT) mission training, including travel as required.

Minimum Position Requirements
  • Current National Registered Paramedic (NRP) certification or equivalent paramedic-level medical knowledge (Registered Nurse preferred).
  • Current Basic Life Support - Healthcare Provider (BLS-HCP) certification.
  • Minimum five (5) years of clinical experience in a military or civilian healthcare environment.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience programming high-fidelity human patient simulators using systems such as Laerdal, Gaumard, and CAE.
  • Experience in instructional design, course development, or healthcare education methodologies.
  • Knowledge of military trauma care, clinical procedures, and Air Force Medical Service Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs).
  • Understanding of applicable Air Force regulations, military medical standards, and healthcare policies.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, word processing software, SharePoint, Learning Management Systems, and audiovisual technologies.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all required security and confidentiality agreements, including a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move simulation equipment.
  • Ability to work in low-light, high-tempo training environments and varying weather conditions supporting simulated aeromedical evacuation operations.

Highly Desired Qualifications
  • One (1) year of military medical or deployment experience.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS).
  • Experience operating audiovisual recording and playback systems.
  • Experience creating and applying moulage for medical simulation.
  • Experience using hyper-realistic simulators and medical task trainers.
  • Previous experience supporting military medical simulation programs.
  • Experience with simulation research, performance metrics, and data analysis.
