What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Simulation Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Simulation Manager, you need expertise in simulation-based training, project management, and a relevant degree such as in healthcare, engineering, or education. Familiarity with simulation software (e.g., Laerdal, CAE), audiovisual systems, and potentially certifications like Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) is important. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help in coordinating teams and delivering effective training experiences. These skills ensure the successful implementation and management of simulation programs that enhance learning outcomes and operational efficiency.

How does a Simulation Manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a project environment?

Simulation Managers often work closely with engineering, design, and project management teams to ensure that simulation models accurately reflect real-world scenarios. They facilitate regular meetings to gather requirements, validate data inputs, and communicate simulation results to stakeholders. Effective collaboration involves translating technical findings into actionable insights for non-technical team members, helping guide decision-making throughout the project lifecycle. This role requires strong communication skills and a proactive approach to ensure alignment across all involved departments.

What are Simulation Managers?

Simulation Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of simulation-based training and educational programs. They often work in fields such as healthcare, aviation, or engineering, managing simulation labs, coordinating scenarios, and ensuring equipment and technology are maintained. Their duties include supervising staff, developing curricula, and ensuring that simulation activities meet organizational and accreditation standards. Simulation Managers play a key role in enhancing training outcomes by providing realistic and effective learning experiences.

Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Engineer to join our team at either Edwards Air Force Base, CA or Nellis AFB, NV.
This critical role supports the Joint Simulation Environment (JSE), which is a high-fidelity virtual environment used for man in the loop mission simulation of cutting-edge DoW aircraft. The JSE is used for high-end pilot training and test in support of acquisition and operation for a variety of new and existing aircraft platforms. This position is very dynamic and will draw on a breadth of skills. Lessons learned with JSE have direct applicability to the warfighter, so maintaining fidelity to the real world is paramount. As such, the well-positioned candidate will have experience with development, test or training for real tactical or strategic aircraft as foundation. Prior experience with JSE architecture, software or operations is highly desirable. Other desirable technical skill sets include, but are not limited to, familiarity with systems engineering, validation and verification methodologies, scientific scripting languages (e.g. Python, MatLab/Simulink, C++), USAF test planning and report writing, information system administration, engineering analyses of mission systems, flight test conduct and range operations, Agile applications (e.g. JIRA, CONFLUENCE) and processes, data analytics, and emerging technologies.
Roles & Responsibilities Based on Experience:
• V&V: Contribute to fidelity and realism of the virtual environment, aircraft platforms and mission systems within the JSE. Participate in the development and execution of comprehensive V&V test programs, ensuring the delivered simulation capability meets user needs.
• Test Preparation & Execution: Write test plans, generating detailed test cards/test procedures which trace to requirements and provide necessary data. Participate in simulation planning and scenario development. Participate in test execution as a discipline engineer, test conductor or JSE operator.
• Data Analysis & Reporting: Condition and analyze raw simulation data using tools developed in Python and MATLAB. Collect, organize, and document data and results required to meet test point objectives. Define and assemble data packages for delivery to customers. Participate in troubleshooting simulation anomalies, contributing to determination of root causes. Write data reports and test reports for presentation to customers for their specific use cases.
• Technical Competency & Collaboration: Rapidly assimilate system-under-test and JSE system knowledge. Participate in system requirement reviews, preliminary/critical design reviews, other programmatic reviews and stakeholder meetings. Coordinate across multiple
teams and organizations. Work with test aircrews and operational subject matter experts to ensure the JSE accurately reflects operational realities and test requirements.
• Flexibility & Adaptability: Accept changing and evolving roles & responsibilities in support of customer's requirements and needs aligned with MTSI's core value to "Own and Solve our Customer's Problems.". Travel may be required for execution at other JSE facilities.
Qualifications & Education:
Required Experience:
• Minimum of 3 years' experience in a technical research, development, or test environment with a strong reputation for professionalism and being a team player
• Familiarity with using and manipulating software tools developed in Python and MATLAB
• Ability to coordinate across multiple teams and organizations, interacting with personnel at all levels
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as persuasion skills to advocate for various stakeholder needs
Desired Qualifications:
• Demonstrated experience in flight test as a discipline engineer or test conductor
• Demonstrated understanding of engineering test methodologies, measures and techniques relevant to simulation and software-intensive environments.
• Experience using Next Generation Threat System (NGTS) or Digital Integrated Air Defense System (DIADS) simulator software
• Proficiency with developing software tools in Python and MATLAB
• Experience with software integration, Linux and Windows operating systems
• Experience with Modeling & Simulation concepts & Standards (e.g., JSE Framework, AFSIM).
• Experience writing test plans, generating test cards based on test plans, and briefing and executing test cards.
• Experience participating in V&V test activities in software intensive or simulation environments.
• Demonstrated understanding of aviation and survivability principles
• Familiarity with requirements management software (DOORS, Jama), Test Management, and Defect Tracking (JIRA)
Education:
• Bachelor's degree in engineering (Aeronautical, Mechanical, Electrical), Computer Science, or another science-based curriculum from an ABET accredited program required
OR
• Bachelor's degree with relevant career & job-related experience
• Advanced degree in an Engineering or related field is desired
Clearance:
• Active SECRET clearance is required
• Active TOP SECRET clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) eligibility and is highly desired
• Candidate must maintain a TS/SCI with Special Access Program (SAP) access clearance as a condition of employment
Travel:
• Up to 20% travel may be required to support customer testing events or related activities.
