What is side accounting?

Side Accountants are professionals who provide accounting services on a part-time, freelance, or contract basis, often alongside a primary job or other commitments. They help businesses and individuals with bookkeeping, tax preparation, financial reporting, and other accounting tasks, typically working remotely or on a flexible schedule. This arrangement allows clients to access expert accounting support without hiring a full-time staff member, and provides accountants with extra income or work-life balance.

What are side jobs in accounting?

Side jobs in accounting involve part-time or freelance positions for accountants who provide advice and various financial services for clients. As a part-time or freelance accountant, you work with each client or account to provide services such as financial tracking and goal setting, budgeting, tax filing, and financial file organization. Part-time positions for accountants may also entail short-term data entry and bookkeeping responsibilities. For example, you may be hired to only manage QuickBooks software for a client. In this role, you may be able to carry out your duties remotely, or you may be asked to work part-time in an office.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a side accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Side Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and bookkeeping, often supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Xero, or Excel, and sometimes certifications such as CPA or CMA, are typically required. Strong attention to detail, time management, and effective communication skills help you manage multiple clients and deadlines efficiently. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring accurate financial records, regulatory compliance, and successful client relationships in a flexible or freelance setting.

What are some common challenges faced by accountants working in a side or part-time capacity, and how can they be managed?

Accountants working in a side or part-time capacity often face challenges such as balancing multiple clients, staying updated on regulatory changes, and managing their time effectively alongside other commitments. Communication is key, as you may need to coordinate with clients who have varying schedules and expectations. To manage these challenges, it's important to set clear boundaries, use accounting software to streamline workflows, and regularly update your professional knowledge to provide accurate and timely services.

Accountant | Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL | Competitive Compensation + Full Benefits
Join a well-established, mission-driven organization in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area as an Accountant, and step into a role with genuine visibility, a collaborative team environment, and a real path for long-term career growth. The work is foundational and varied, spanning journal entries, reconciliations, sales tax preparation, and cross-functional coverage across AP and AR. The office environment is open and collaborative, and the culture is one where employees genuinely enjoy showing up - leadership is approachable, voices are heard, and the organization invests in its people through meaningful benefits including tuition reimbursement. Growth here is real, with a visible path toward increasing responsibility and senior accounting roles over time. If you have a solid understanding of accounting fundamentals, are comfortable in Excel, and thrive in a team-oriented setting, this is a strong opportunity to plant roots somewhere that will invest in your future.
Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and post journal entries accurately and on a timely basis as part of the monthly close cycle.
  • Record and reconcile depreciation schedules across fixed asset accounts.
  • Perform account reconciliations and ensure all balances are clean, current, and tied out.
  • Prepare sales tax filings and ensure timely and accurate submission in compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Handle cash and deposit processing with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Provide coverage and support across accounts payable and accounts receivable functions as needed.
  • Assist with additional accounting tasks and special projects during close week, including occasional overtime.

Requirements
  • Solid foundational understanding of accounting principles - debits, credits, and the relationship between financial statements.
  • Proficiency in Excel, including basic formulas, worksheet formatting, and filtering and sorting data.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks accurately within defined deadlines.
  • Comfortable working in an open, collaborative office environment with regular team interaction.
  • Willingness to flex hours during close week when deadlines demand it.
  • Experience with a mid-market ERP or accounting system - familiarity with cloud-based or Microsoft-based platforms a plus.
  • Background in or exposure to nonprofit or mission-driven organizations a plus.

Why you'll love working here
  • High visibility from day one - you will report directly to a senior leader who is actively involved in the work and invested in your development.
  • A genuine long-term growth path, with opportunities to advance into senior accounting and finance leadership roles over time.
  • A warm, people-first culture where leadership is approachable, employee voices are heard, and the team actually enjoys working together.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, plus PTO and sick time that accrues over time.
  • 401(k) retirement plan and additional perks that reflect an organization that genuinely takes care of its people.
