What is side accounting?

Side Accountants are professionals who provide accounting services on a part-time, freelance, or contract basis, often alongside a primary job or other commitments. They help businesses and individuals with bookkeeping, tax preparation, financial reporting, and other accounting tasks, typically working remotely or on a flexible schedule. This arrangement allows clients to access expert accounting support without hiring a full-time staff member, and provides accountants with extra income or work-life balance.

What are side jobs in accounting?

Side jobs in accounting involve part-time or freelance positions for accountants who provide advice and various financial services for clients. As a part-time or freelance accountant, you work with each client or account to provide services such as financial tracking and goal setting, budgeting, tax filing, and financial file organization. Part-time positions for accountants may also entail short-term data entry and bookkeeping responsibilities. For example, you may be hired to only manage QuickBooks software for a client. In this role, you may be able to carry out your duties remotely, or you may be asked to work part-time in an office.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a side accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Side Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and bookkeeping, often supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Xero, or Excel, and sometimes certifications such as CPA or CMA, are typically required. Strong attention to detail, time management, and effective communication skills help you manage multiple clients and deadlines efficiently. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring accurate financial records, regulatory compliance, and successful client relationships in a flexible or freelance setting.

What are some common challenges faced by accountants working in a side or part-time capacity, and how can they be managed?

Accountants working in a side or part-time capacity often face challenges such as balancing multiple clients, staying updated on regulatory changes, and managing their time effectively alongside other commitments. Communication is key, as you may need to coordinate with clients who have varying schedules and expectations. To manage these challenges, it's important to set clear boundaries, use accounting software to streamline workflows, and regularly update your professional knowledge to provide accurate and timely services.

Job description

Job Description
Project Accountant | Bradenton, FL | $65,000-$75,000 + Annual Bonus + Full Benefits
Join a well-respected, community-rooted construction company in Bradenton as a Project Accountant and step into a role with real variety, genuine growth potential, and one of the best team cultures in the market. This is a full-cycle project accounting position supporting multiple active projects simultaneously across a company that is in aggressive growth mode, expanding into new markets and scaling its operations significantly. You will serve as the financial liaison between the company, project owners, and subcontractors, managing all billing coordination, subcontractor financial paperwork, and lien waivers across your assigned project portfolio.
There is a genuine opportunity for the right person to grow beyond project accounting into broader financial reporting responsibilities as the company scales. The culture here is something people genuinely brag about: no egos, a collaborative team environment, Friday morning team breakfasts, early Friday release, and an owner who is known for taking care of the people who show up for the business. If you are detail-oriented, organized, and thrive in a team-first environment, this is a place where you can build a long and rewarding career.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own full-cycle project accounting across 2-3 active projects immediately, with additional projects coming on as the company continues to grow.
  • Manage subcontractor billing, lien waivers, and all related financial paperwork from initiation through close-out.
  • Serve as the primary financial liaison between the company, project owners, and subcontractors - ensuring all billing and documentation flows accurately and on time.
  • Coordinate owner billing and ensure invoices are prepared, submitted, and tracked in alignment with contract terms and project schedules.
  • Maintain accurate and organized project financial records throughout the life of each project.
  • Assist the Controller and CFO with financial reporting as the company scales and the finance function grows.
  • Support process improvements and help build the infrastructure that allows the accounting function to handle increased project volume efficiently.

Requirements
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and collaborative - a no-ego, team-first attitude is non-negotiable here.
  • Ability to manage multiple active projects simultaneously and keep financial records clean and current across all of them.
  • Basic to intermediate Excel proficiency - candidates who want to grow into broader financial roles will benefit from stronger Excel skills including pivot tables and lookups.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills - this role interfaces regularly with owners, subcontractors, and internal leadership.
  • Construction accounting experience - subcontractor billing, lien waivers, and project-based accounting familiarity is a meaningful differentiator.
  • Public-sector or government-funded project billing experience is especially valuable.
  • Familiarity with a construction ERP or accounting system - willingness to learn is equally welcome.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field - non-degreed candidates with strong construction accounting experience will be considered.

Why you'll love working here
  • A genuinely exceptional team culture - no egos, deep collaboration, and a leadership team and ownership group that is known for taking care of their people.
  • Real growth opportunity - the company is expanding aggressively into new markets, and the right person has a clear path to take on broader financial reporting responsibilities as the business scales.
  • Friday morning team breakfasts, early Friday release, team events, and a standard 40-hour work week that respects your time outside the office.
  • Flexible leadership - the Controller accommodates appointments, family needs, and life's day-to-day realities without making it a production.
  • A strong annual bonus program - the company paid out nearly $1M in bonuses across approximately 60 employees last year.
  • Competitive base salary of $65,000-$75,000 depending on experience, plus 3 weeks PTO, 401(k) with company match, and health insurance including a difference card that covers out-of-pocket gaps.
