We are now hiring a full time, talented Workshop/ Field Service Technician-Wind to join our team based out of Cambridge, ON, Canada. Job Summary:

The Service Technician performs work on Wind and CS gearboxes, main shafts, couplings, spare parts, and related components both in the shop and in the field. The technician provides technical expertise at customer sites, adding to or preserving the value of customer assets by efficiently executing service orders and ensuring customer satisfaction.

Millwrights, mechanics, or individuals with strong mechanical skills are preferred. The technician will work on various styles of gearboxes and couplings, performing assembly of Wind and CS gearboxes and their sub-assemblies. Work is performed from blueprints, parts lists, and assembly cards and involves the use of parts washers, freezers, ovens, cranes, fork trucks, hand tools, and power tools. The technician will disassemble and assemble gear units, can work independently or with other assemblers, will guide lower grade assemblers, and may perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.


Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

Job Planning and Preparation

  • Participate in planning for assigned jobs, including:
    • Gathering and preparing tools, information, personal protective equipment (PPE), parts, and other items required for the successful execution of the service order
    • Packaging and coordinating with the assigned planner to ensure all required items are received at the proper time and place
    • Making transportation and lodging arrangements and notifying the assigned planner and Field Service Lead for the job
  • Participate in Job Safety Analyses (JSA) prior to every new job.
  • Be present at the worksite, prepared and ready to work at the agreedupon time. Manage travel delays and communicate changes in travel plans with the job Lead.
  • Follow all travelrelated policies.

Field and Shop Service Activities

  • Perform endoscope inspections, visual inspections, and similar diagnostic procedures on gearboxes and components on wind and industrial units at customer sites.
  • Repair, remove, and/or install gearboxes and components on wind and industrial units at customer sites (e.g., main shafts, pitch tubes, gears, bearings, gearing accessories, brake assemblies, shrink disks, lubrication and filter systems, module sections).
  • Provide supplementary services for customers as assigned by the job Lead.
  • Assist with and support similar responsibilities and tasks in a workshop setting and in the field.

Safety, Tools, and Equipment

  • Inspect, properly maintain, and safely operate all PPE, materialhandling equipment, vehicles, rigging, and tools prior to and after every use.
  • Follow all equipment procedures and notify the job Lead or Field Service Manager of missing, broken, or otherwise inadequate resources.
  • Maintain full awareness of surroundings and potential job hazards. Notify the Lead or Field Service Manager of safety concerns or potential equipment issues.
  • Stop working immediately to avoid unsafe practices. Report all incidents and nearmisses.
  • Observe all safety procedures and practices and maintain a safe working environment at heights.

Documentation and Customer Requirements

  • Complete and submit all jobrelated documents, reports, and administrative processes accurately and in a timely manner. Be diligent in recording all work performed and parts used.
  • Follow all customer and jobspecific procedures regarding site checkin, checkout, training, reporting, wrapup, incident reports, and other similar requirements of working at a site.

Required Education and Experience

  • Grade 12 or equivalent GED

Competencies and Skills

  • Technical competency in gearbox failure analysis and diagnosis, gearbox repair procedures, gearbox installation and removal, component repair and placement, and other similar activities required to diagnose, repair, and maintain wind and industrial gearboxes.
  • Ability to maintain professional communications and boundaries while managing complex situations and interacting with a variety of individuals and personalities.
  • Advanced knowledge of data collection and report writing; able to effectively analyze and synthesize information and communicate numeric and technical data accurately and in an easily understood manner.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with coworkers, supervisors, customers, and other individuals encountered while performing work.
  • Advanced computer skills, with the ability to accurately and efficiently manage data in spreadsheets and databases, and to utilize advanced features of MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Skype for Business, Office 365, and other commonly used office programs.
  • Ability to take initiative and operate calmly under pressure, be an effective team member, and contribute to the overall success of the team.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships across departments and work teams, and to effectively manage projects and tasks with others at distant work sites.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to follow all safetyrelated practices, including the donning, doffing, and sustained use of all prescribed PPE.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 70 lbs. for extended periods.
  • Physical ability to climb and descend ladders up to 360 feet.
  • Due to ladder safeworking limits, the need to maintain a body weight lower than 280 lbs, including all PPE (harness, lanyards, etc.).
  • Ability to stand, crouch, bend, and kneel for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate a computer for up to 8 hours in a workday, including typing and reading from a monitor (for reporting, work instructions, etc.).
  • Ability to perform visual inspection of objects and the environment, read small print, discern colors, and maintain visual awareness of environmental hazards.
  • Basic memorization and recall capacity, the ability to synthesize information, and the capacity for complex thought processes.

Other Requirements

  • Consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to travel from home location up to 70% of the time and for up to 4 weeks at a time.
