Job description

Role: Telephone Interviewer
Training Dates:
  • SSL Orientation - September 3, 2026, 1 - 5 pm AND
  • Recruit 1 Interviewer Training - September 10, 2026, 12 - 5:30 pm AND
  • Omnibus Training - October 6, 2026, 12 -4 pm
    OR
  • SSL Orientation - September 26, 2026 2 - 6 pm AND
  • Recruit 2 Interviewer Training - September 29, 2026, 12 -5:30 pm

Training Mode: In-person
Payrate: $19.75 per hour
Production Dates: August 31 - December 30, 2026
Required Availability: 16 hours per week
Calls will primarily be made between 2 pm to 10 pm - 7 days a week, except Fri when calling ends at 9 pm
Data Collection Mode: Telephone, reminder calling
Summary of position: This position within the Survey Services Lab (SSL) offers an excellent opportunity for candidates who are friendly, have strong persuasive communication skills, and demonstrate a patient approach. Interviewers (data collection staff) play a vital role in conducting computer-assisted telephone-based assignments such as interviews and/or other customer service-related tasks to help meet complex social research survey goals. Success in this role requires demonstrated excellence in customer relations, clear communication, effective listening, and strong deductive reasoning skills. The position also involves implementing mail survey operations, coding, providing customer assistance, and carrying out quality control functions for survey projects.
The SSL operates seven days a week, often until midnight, and this position requires coverage of evening shifts and at least one weekend shift weekly. It is located on University of Michigan's Central Campus and requires on-site work in the office. This is a temporary position with work hours scheduled according to project assignments, offering flexibility and the opportunity to engage with a variety of survey projects. Candidates who bring a persuasive and efficient mindset, flexibility, curiosity, and a friendly, patient demeanor are encouraged to apply to this impactful and collaborative team.
Required Qualifications and Duties:
  • Excellent reading skills, including pronunciation and enunciation.
  • Able to maintain conversation while accurately recording information.
  • Able to receive and apply feedback about adherence to project requirements.
  • Available to work 2 evening shifts (between 4p-10p Monday-Thursday and 4p-9p Friday) and 1 weekend shift (Saturday 2p-10p or Sunday 2p-10p) every week. A shift is typically 4 hours long.

Desired Experience:
  • Previous experience as a telephone interviewer.
  • Previous experience with telephone sales.
  • Previous experience in a customer relations position.
