Job description

Join Axon and be a Force for Good.
At Axon, we're on a mission to Protect Life. We're explorers, pursuing society's most critical safety and justice issues with our ecosystem of devices and cloud software. Like our products, we work better together. We connect with candor and care, seeking out diverse perspectives from our customers, communities and each other.
Life at Axon is fast-paced, challenging and meaningful. Here, you'll take ownership and drive real change. Constantly grow as you work hard for a mission that matters at a company where you matter.
Your Impact
Batteries are a critical subsystem in all modern mobile devices and require careful attention to safety, performance, reliability, and regulatory compliance. As the Senior Systems Engineer for Batteries within the Devices Hardware Engineering team, you will serve as the subject matter expert for battery technologies across Axon's product portfolio.
In this role, you will provide technical leadership and guidance on the specification, design, integration, validation, and lifecycle management of battery cells and battery pack solutions. You will bring structure, rigor, and engineering excellence to how Axon evaluates and safely adopts emerging battery technologies in a rapidly evolving industry where both primary and rechargeable battery cells continue to increase in power and energy density.
You will lead the evaluation of new battery technologies, identify mature and suitable battery chemistries for Axon products, and drive battery strategy across multiple device platforms. Working closely with cross-functional engineering teams, you will establish battery selection criteria, lead supplier evaluations, and help standardize best-in-class battery solutions across the organization.
You will also partner with battery cell and pack suppliers to develop, qualify, and deliver battery subassemblies that meet stringent safety, performance, quality, and regulatory requirements. These solutions will support high-volume manufacturing of mission-critical products used by first responders and enterprise customers to capture truth, protect lives, and accelerate justice in the communities they serve.
What You'll Do
  • Develop cross-functional system requirements for battery sub-assemblies across body-worn, automotive, and fixed outdoor product lines
  • Define cell and pack requirements (capacity, voltage, cycle life, temperature range, discharge rate) for each program
  • Own the battery integration checklist for each new product
  • Evaluate new battery chemistries and technologies from safety and performance perspectives
  • Monitor industry trends - new chemistries, form factors, energy density improvements - and translate into actionable roadmap input
  • Develop and maintain Axon's battery technology roadmap and integration plan for future solutions across all device platforms
  • Lead technical RFP process in collaboration with cross-functional teams for supplier selection
  • Provide technical input into RFQs for battery cell and pack suppliers
  • Lead supplier qualification - review datasheets, test reports, and qualification data; push back when specs don't hold
  • Manage supplier relationships from qualification through production
  • Lead battery system integration across body-worn, automotive (Fleet), and fixed outdoor (Outpost) products
  • Work with EE and ME teams on pack mechanical envelope, connector interfaces, thermal requirements, and protection circuit specs
  • Lead development of battery pack solutions inclusive of technology selection and design of BMS/PCM, Fuel Gauging, and Charger Interfaces, designed for high-volume manufacturing.
  • Partner with suppliers to qualify and deliver subassemblies meeting safety, performance, quality, and regulatory requirements
  • Lead detailed design reviews of supplier and internal BMS schematics and PCB layouts; review for protection coverage, design margins, fault handling, and safe operating area compliance.
  • Review battery integration into product for compatibility with cell operating limits
  • Write and execute battery characterization and verification test plans for NPI programs (capacity, cycle life, abuse, temperature)
  • Lead Ongoing Reliability Testing (ORT) for secondary batteries across multiple suppliers
  • Interpret test data, make go/no-go calls at program gates, and own battery-related failure analysis
  • Ensure compliance with UN 38.3, IEC 62133, UL 2054, and applicable market/regulatory requirements
  • Track regulatory changes impacting the portfolio and flag early
  • Present regularly on battery technology trends and NPI program status to cross-functional stakeholders
  • Monitor, report, and maintain a dashboard covering Axon's full fleet of batteries across all active programs
What You Bring
  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field
  • 6-9 years of battery systems, power systems, or related interdisciplinary engineering experience
  • Industry experience with high-performance, battery-powered, size- and weight-constrained products such as body cameras, action cameras, wearables, or mobile communications devices
  • Hands-on experience with battery pack development from concept through high-volume manufacturing - including cell selection, pack design review, and supplier qualification
  • Experience leading Ongoing Reliability Testing (ORT) programs for secondary batteries across multiple suppliers
  • Experience with NPI program cycles (EVT, DVT, PVT) and the associated battery characterization and verification activities at each gate
  • Deep familiarity with battery chemistry types (Li-ion, LiPo, LiFePO4, primary lithium) and their tradeoffs in safety, energy density, cycle life, and temperature performance
  • Solid understanding of battery pack architecture - cell configuration, BMS design, protection circuits, fuel gauging, and thermal management
  • Solid understanding of power, thermal, and mechanical constraints in integration of embedded battery assemblies across body-worn, automotive, and fixed outdoor form factors
  • Familiarity with emerging battery technologies and ability to assess maturity and suitability for product integration
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical RFP and RFQ processes for battery cell and pack suppliers
  • Proven ability to independently lead scoped engineering analysis and drive tradeoffs across EE, ME, firmware, product management, and test teams
  • Experience managing supplier relationships through qualification and into production, including audit and corrective action processes
  • Demonstrated experience achieving regulatory certification for worldwide product deployment: UN 38.3, IEC 62133-2, UL 1642, UL 2054
  • Working knowledge of additional standards relevant to battery fleet management and enterprise products: IEC 62619, UL 1973
  • Familiarity with transportation and shipping requirements for lithium batteries (IATA, DOT 49 CFR)
  • Proven experience developing systems engineering documentation: system architectures, block diagrams, interface diagrams, SRDs, and requirements traceability matrices
  • Experience writing objective, testable engineering requirements and owning technical design specifications for battery subsystems
  • Ability to build and maintain battery fleet dashboards and present program status and technology assessments to cross-functional and executive audiences
  • Solid skills with documentation, analysis, and presentation tools: Word, Excel, PowerPoint; familiarity with PLM/requirements tools (e.g., Arena, Jira, Windchill, or equivalent) is a plus
