Job description

Discord has a highly engaged community of millions of daily active users who use the platform for many different reasons, but there's one thing that nearly everyone does: play video games. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming, and we are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to hang out before, during, and after playing games.
Discord is on a mission to create space for everyone to find belonging. Trusted by millions of people to keep their communications private and out of the hands of evildoers, Security and Privacy are necessary to Discord's success.
We're looking for a Senior Privacy Engineer to join us in protecting Discord's users. If you are an engineer with a passion for privacy, a deep sense of curiosity, and an endless desire to improve Discord for our users, read on!
What You'll Be Doing:
  • Build and operate the systems that enable data rights for our users across the data lifecycle, including collection, access, and deletion.
  • Own end to end software development of new tools and scalable solutions to optimize the work of the Discord Privacy Program and enable teams to use user data effectively and responsibly in a complex cloud environment.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Product, Data, and Legal to conduct risk assessments, code reviews, and ensure compliance with Discord's Privacy Principles and regulatory requirements.
  • Advocate for privacy-preserving solutions, act as a privacy subject matter expert across teams, and identify new opportunities to promote our privacy posture.
  • Lead Privacy incident response efforts, including mitigating situations that may pose a risk to our Privacy Principles and providing assistance in incident response efforts outside of the privacy domain.

What you should have:
  • A passion for user privacy and data protection.
  • 3+ years of work experience in Privacy or Security engineering or building production systems that meet legal requirements.
  • 3+ years of experience in at least one general purpose programming language (e.g. Python, Rust, Typescript).
  • 3+ years of experience working in cloud-based environments (we use Google Cloud).
  • Experience with concepts and practices such as threat modeling, data lifecycle management, and data classification
  • Familiarity with privacy concerns that apply in an industry setting, including consent, deletion, and retention, and a basic understanding of regulations such as GDPR or CCPA.
  • Experience with conducting reviews of system architecture and product feature specs and driving mitigations of data protection risk, deviations from privacy policies, and privacy dark patterns

Bonus Points:
  • Experience developing, operating, and debugging distributed systems.
  • Experience with modern data platform infrastructure
  • Experience integrating internal systems with privacy and risk management platforms

Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties). Relocation assistance may be available.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $196,000 to $220,500 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
