Job Summary

Church & Dwight is seeking a Senior Packaging Engineer to join our team. This role is responsible for leading packaging development programs from concept through commercialization across multiple Strategic Business Units (SBUs) in international markets. The position supports both new product innovation and lifecycle management while ensuring packaging performance, quality, cost, and timing objectives are achieved.

About the Role

The Senior Packaging Engineer will serve as a key packaging representative on cross-functional SBU teams, partnering closely with global engineering teams and local subject matter experts. This role leads primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging development initiatives, oversees qualification and validation programs, supports cost-savings and sustainability efforts, and provides technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.

Work Environment
  • Hybrid: The role will be based in Princeton, NJ and requires in-person attendance on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with remote work options on Mondays and Fridays.

  • Flexibility to participate in global meetings during early mornings or late evenings is required.

Role Accountabilities and Responsibilities
  • Lead end-to-end packaging development programs from concept initiation through manufacturing launch.

  • Develop and qualify primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging systems including plastics, flexible films, corrugated, folding cartons, thermoforms, bottles, tubes, and injection-molded components.

  • Design, plan, and execute analytical testing, package performance testing, line trials, and commercialization activities.

  • Conduct hands-on evaluations in lab, warehouse, and manufacturing environments to ensure conformance to requirements.

  • Troubleshoot packaging and line-related issues independently during development, trials, and commercialization.

  • Independently plan and execute projects, including timelines, risk assessments, contingency plans, and action plans.

  • Act as liaison between global engineering teams and local packaging SMEs to align on testing methodologies and requirements.

  • Manage multiple concurrent projects across innovation, quality improvement, and margin enhancement initiatives.

  • Analyze results and translate findings into clear, actionable technical recommendations.

  • Develop component specifications using DOE, SPC, FMEA, and Lean Six Sigma principles.

  • Evaluate graphics and printing processes and assess their impact on package performance, sustainability, and quality.

  • Understand product-process-package interactions and failure modes to guide material and design decisions.

  • Lead qualification programs for new materials, formats, and suppliers.

  • Leverage and challenge suppliers to develop innovative technologies, materials, and cost-advantaged packaging formats.

  • Support cost-savings and value-engineering initiatives tied to packaging design and material selection.

  • Ensure all project documentation, test data, trial reports, and qualification records are complete, accurate, and retained.

  • Ensure packaging quality expectations and regulatory requirements are met for global market launches.

  • Identify gaps in internal testing capabilities and recommend additional methodologies as needed.

  • Act as a technical resource and provide mentorship to junior engineers, technicians, and co-op students.

  • May supervise Packaging Technicians or Packaging Engineers in delivery of SBU projects.

Education and Experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Engineering, or related Engineering discipline.

  • 5+ years of experience in packaging development.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capabilities.

  • End-to-end packaging development experience (primary through tertiary).

  • Proven ability to manage projects independently and lead cross-functional initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in consumer packaged goods (CPG) environments.

  • Experience launching products in multiple global markets.

  • Experience leading packaging projects through commercialization in plant-based manufacturing environments.

  • Lean Six Sigma certification (Green Belt or higher).

  • Experience with Microsoft Project, MiniTab, and Agile tools.

  • Working knowledge of CAPE Pack, ArtiosCAD, and AutoCAD.

  • Experience supporting cost-savings, sustainability, and material optimization initiatives.

Compensation and Benefits

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $92,500-$131,700. This position is also eligible for a bonus.

U.S. employees are entitled to paid holidays, floating holidays, and vacation days starting in their first year of employment depending on hire date. The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, job-related knowledge/skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal pay parity. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
