Job description

Position Overview

The Junior Copy Editor & Proofreader is the gatekeeper for Duluth Trading Co.'s legendary brand voice. Reporting to the Copy Manager, you are the eagle-eyed protector of our punchlines, product specs, and grammar. You ensure that every piece of copy-from a witty catalog headline to an SEO-driven Amazon bullet point-is perfectly accurate, legally sound, and distinctly aligned with our rugged, humorous tone before it reaches the customer. We may even ask you to step in and contribute a few words of your own.

Position Details

Work Environment:

At Duluth Trading Company, we value face-to-face interactions that foster our culture of learning, creativity, and teamwork. The role is based at our headquarters near Madison, WI. You will work in the office Monday through Thursday, with the option to work from home on Fridays if you prefer.

What You'll Do:

  • The Final Polish: Proofread high volumes of digital and print assets (emails, website PDPs, social media, catalog, and retail signage) for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting accuracy.
  • Voice & Tone Guardian: Ensure all copy sounds undeniably "Duluth." You know the difference between a clever, hard-working pun and a cheesy joke, and you help maintain our premium standard across all touchpoints.
  • Technical Accuracy: Cross-reference product copy against merchandising data sheets. You are the last line of defense to ensure fabric specs, tech features (like the Crouch Gusset), and sizing details are 100% correct to prevent customer returns.
  • Channel Adaptation: Assist the copy team in optimizing and formatting existing copy for specific platforms (e.g., helping translate our branded DTC copy into data-rich, algorithm-friendly bullet points for Amazon/Rufus).
  • Style Guide Ownership: Maintain and update the official Duluth Brand Style Guide and terminology glossary, keeping the broader creative and cross-functional teams aligned.
  • Seasonal Writing: Act as a release valve for the copy team by contributing occasional writing during high-demand points in the year. While copyediting will be your day-to-day, we're looking for someone willing to step in for spot writing duties.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor's Degree
    • Equivalent work experience will be considered
  • Experience: 1-3 years in proofreading, copy editing, or copywriting (in-house retail, e-commerce, or agency experience is a strong plus).
  • The Eagle Eye: You have a borderline obsessive attention to detail. You spot the missing hyphen, the double space, and the incorrect trademark symbol when everyone else is moving too fast.
  • The Brand Champion: You appreciate smart, functional storytelling. You know how to edit for extreme clarity without stripping away the writer's personality or the brand's humor.
  • High-Velocity Execution: You thrive in a fast-paced retail environment and can seamlessly pivot from deep-reading a 100-page catalog to quick-proofing a reactive TikTok caption.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Physical Environment & Travel Expectations:

  • Travel is required for less than 10% of company-related meetings, programs, and/or events.
  • Sitting is required for 90% of working hours.
  • Standing is required for 10% of working hours.
  • Continuous arm, hand, and wrist movement (ie: typing)
  • Occasional reaching, twisting, and bending.
  • Noise level no greater than casual conversation.
  • Ability to perform work in cubicle workstations or an office setting.
  • Work in temperatures ranging from 65 - 75 degrees.
