Job Description

The Senior Manager, Transportation Operations is responsible for the overall leadership, performance, and strategic direction of transportation and yard management operations supporting customer supply chain requirements. This role oversees multiple dispatch teams, supervisors, and operational functions across one or more locations, ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective execution of yard moves, shuttle services, and transportation activities.

The Senior Manager is accountable for achieving service, safety, financial, and employee engagement objectives while driving continuous improvement initiatives. This position partners closely with customers, operations leadership, maintenance, safety, and transportation planning teams to ensure operational excellence and a best-in-class customer experience.

Performance is measured through key metrics including service level attainment, on‑time pickup and delivery performance, safety results, labor productivity, equipment utilization, cost management, regulatory compliance, customer satisfaction, and employee retention.

Key Responsibilities Operational Leadership
  • Lead and oversee transportation, dispatch, and yard management operations across multiple shifts, sites, or customer accounts.
  • Ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant execution of all transportation services, including yard movements, shuttle operations, and regional transportation activities.
  • Establish operational priorities and provide strategic direction to supervisors and frontline leadership teams.
  • Monitor operational performance and implement corrective actions to address service failures, productivity gaps, and operational disruptions.
  • Develop and maintain contingency plans to support business continuity and customer requirements during peak periods, staffing shortages, or unforeseen disruptions.
Team Leadership & Development
  • Directly manage Transportation Supervisors, Dispatch Supervisors, and other operational leaders.
  • Build a high‑performance culture focused on accountability, safety, customer service, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance management to leadership teams.
  • Develop succession plans and support employee growth through training and career development opportunities.
  • Drive employee engagement initiatives aimed at improving retention, productivity, and overall team performance.
Customer & Business Management
  • Serve as the primary operational escalation point for customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Foster strong customer relationships through regular operational reviews, business updates, and performance discussions.
  • Partner with customers to identify opportunities for process improvements and service enhancements.
  • Ensure contractual obligations, service commitments, and customer expectations are consistently met or exceeded.
Safety & Compliance
  • Champion a safety‑first culture and ensure compliance with all company policies, DOT regulations, Hours of Service requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Lead safety initiatives, audits, investigations, and corrective action plans.
  • Monitor safety performance metrics and proactively address trends or areas of concern.
  • Ensure all transportation personnel maintain required certifications, qualifications, and training standards.
Financial & Performance Management
  • Manage operational budgets, labor costs, and operating expenses to achieve financial objectives.
  • Analyze operational and financial performance data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Drive productivity improvements and cost‑saving initiatives without compromising service or safety.
  • Monitor key performance indicators including:
    • On‑Time Delivery (OTD)
    • On‑Time Pickup (OTP)
    • Driver Productivity
    • Equipment Utilization

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with transportation planning, fleet maintenance, safety, HR, and customer operations teams to ensure alignment and operational success.
  • Collaborate with maintenance teams to maximize equipment availability and minimize downtime.
  • Support network optimization, process standardization, and continuous improvement initiatives across the operation.
  • Lead implementation efforts for operational changes, new business startups, and customer transitions.
Qualifications
  • H.S. diploma/GED required
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Logistics, Supply Chain preferred
  • Master's degree in Business, Logistics, Transportation or related field preferred
  • Five (5) years or more relevant experience in supply chain, logistics, warehouse or industry related field required
  • Five (5) years or more managing, leading and developing direct reports required
  • Three (3) years or more Profit & Loss responsibility preferred
  • One (1) year or more customer interaction preferred

Compensation Information

The compensation offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s relevant experience; education, including relevant degrees or certifications; work location; market data/ranges; internal equity; internal salary ranges; etc. The position may also be eligible to receive an annual bonus, commission, and/or long-term incentive plan based on the level and/or type. Compensation ranges for the position are below:

Pay Type: Salaried

Minimum Pay Range: 85000

Maximum Pay Range: 96000
