What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Growth Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Growth Engineer, you need expertise in software engineering, data analysis, and growth experimentation, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with A/B testing platforms, analytics tools like Google Analytics or Mixpanel, and programming languages such as Python or JavaScript is crucial. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you effectively work with cross-functional teams and drive impactful growth initiatives. These skills enable you to identify growth opportunities, execute data-driven experiments, and deliver measurable business results.

How does a Senior Growth Engineer typically collaborate with product and marketing teams to drive user acquisition?

As a Senior Growth Engineer, you will work closely with both product and marketing teams to design, implement, and optimize experiments aimed at increasing user engagement and acquisition. This often involves translating marketing strategies into technical solutions, analyzing data to identify growth opportunities, and iterating quickly based on results. Collaboration usually takes the form of regular cross-functional meetings, shared goal-setting, and close communication to ensure alignment between technical efforts and business objectives. Your technical expertise allows you to bridge gaps between teams and ensure that growth initiatives are both feasible and scalable.

What is a Senior Growth Engineer?

A Senior Growth Engineer is a specialized software engineer who focuses on designing, developing, and optimizing products and systems to drive user acquisition, engagement, and retention. They use a combination of technical skills and data-driven experimentation to identify growth opportunities and implement solutions that scale. Senior Growth Engineers often collaborate with marketing, product, and analytics teams to run A/B tests, improve onboarding flows, and optimize conversion funnels. Their work is highly iterative and metrics-focused, aiming to achieve measurable business results.

What is the difference between Senior Growth Engineer vs Growth Engineer?

AspectSenior Growth EngineerGrowth Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in marketing, engineering, or related field; experience in growth strategiesBachelor's degree; some experience in growth or marketing roles
Work EnvironmentCross-functional teams, startup or tech companies, data-driven cultureStartups, tech companies, marketing teams
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in tech, SaaS, e-commerce industries for senior rolesCommon in similar industries, often entry to mid-level roles

Job description

About Pelago Engineering:

Our engineering team operates as empowered, outcome-oriented problem solvers, working in close partnership with product, design, and clinical teams to improve member outcomes at scale.

As AI transforms how software is built, we are intentionally evolving our development lifecycle so we spend less time on mechanical implementation and more time on system design, judgment, and impact.

How We Work:
  • Outcome-driven: Engineers are given problems to solve, not just features to build. Success is measured by learning, impact, and outcomes-not velocity alone
  • AI-native: We use AI across the SDLC to accelerate implementation, testing, and review. Engineers focus on defining intent, validating behavior, and designing resilient systems
  • High autonomy, high accountability: Teams have real ownership over their domains. With autonomy comes responsibility for quality, safety, and results
  • Cross-functional by default: Engineers partner deeply with Product, Design, Data, and Clinical. Discovery, experimentation, and delivery are shared responsibilities
  • Quality and safety matter: We build in a regulated, member-impacting domain. Reliability, observability, and correctness are first-class concerns
What You'll Do:

Instead of task lists, anchor on ownership:

  • Own meaningful problem spaces end-to-end, from discovery through delivery and iteration
  • Design and evolve systems that support safe, scalable, AI-augmented development
  • Use data and experimentation to validate whether solutions actually work
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to balance member impact, clinical constraints, and technical tradeoffs
  • Shape how we work-our tools, processes, and culture
What We Look For:

ย We explicitly assess for empowerment:

  • You start with "why" before diving into "how"
  • You're energized by ambiguity and collaborative problem-shaping
  • You use AI to amplify your judgment and move faster on what matters
  • You think in systems and anticipate second-order effects
  • You want to own outcomes, not just ship features
Overview of the Role:ย

Pelago is hiring a Senior Growth Engineer to build and optimize the technical systems that power member acquisition, activation, and early engagement.ย This role sits at the intersection of engineering, product, and marketing. You will own the code and infrastructure behind our highest-impact growth surfaces, landing pages, registration flows, onboarding journeys, and experimentation systems, with direct accountability for measurable business outcomes.

As a growth driver, you will identify funnel opportunities, propose and ship experiments, and turn performance data into product decisions that increase conversion and member growth.

This is a full-stack role with a frontend lean, ideal for an engineer who thinks like a product owner, thrives in fast experimentation cycles, and wants to see their work directly move company-level metrics.

This is a hybrid role with a high-collaboration rhythm (3 days/week in our NYC office).

In this role you will:
  • Own and optimize Pelago's highest-impact growth surfaces - including landing pages, registration flows, onboarding experiences, and other key conversion pathways across web and mobile.
  • Design, build, and iterate on A/B tests and multivariate experiments, using both traditional experimentation frameworks and AI-assisted approaches to increase testing velocity and insight generation.
  • Leverage AI tools and automation to accelerate prototyping, personalization, and experimentation across growth surfaces.
  • Translate acquisition and campaign strategy into high-performing technical execution, partnering closely with Marketing and Product to move conversion and activation metrics.
  • Ensure comprehensive instrumentation and analytics coverage across the funnel so every change is measurable and insights drive prioritization.
  • Continuously improve performance, SEO, accessibility, and Core Web Vitals to maximize traffic efficiency and conversion.
  • Ship quickly while maintaining reliability, privacy, and compliance in a regulated healthcare environment where member trust is non-negotiable.
The background we are looking for:ย
  • Strong proficiency in React and TypeScript, with experience building performant, user-facing web applications.
  • Experience implementing and iterating on A/B tests to improve conversion and user flows.
  • Comfort working across the stack (APIs, backend services, analytics instrumentation) to ship end-to-end growth improvements.
  • Data-informed mindset, including event tracking and funnel analysis to guide experimentation and prioritization.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows (e.g., agentic coding tools, prompt-driven prototyping, automation tooling), and a demonstrated ability to use AI to increase iteration speed and engineering leverage.
  • Experience collaborating with product and marketing partners in fast-paced, experimentation-driven environments.
What you'll love about us:

We have a whole host of perks for our people! From life essentials to nice-to-haves, there are more than a few good reasons to love working with us. We strive to ensure Pelago employees have equitable access to healthcare, wellbeing, time away, and then some.

  • Generous and meaningful equity package
  • Full Medical, Dental, & Vision coverageย
  • 401k Planย
  • Unlimited PTO Policy, 10 paid holidays, & company wide "Me Time" Days
  • Paid maternity, paternity & new parent leave
  • Flexible working environment
  • Annual Learning and Development stipend to support continued learning and career development
  • Wellness Reimbursement Programย
  • Access to Reproductive & Family Planning Careย
  • Substance Use Support for employees and family membersย

At this time, we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this position.ย

Please note that Pelago is dedicated to providing accommodations to candidates upon request. If you need accommodations at any point throughout the interview process, please reach out to your recruiter.
