Job description

The Senior Technical Writer will be responsible for developing, evaluating, and maintaining high-quality technical documentation, training materials, operational procedures, and deployment guides supporting complex technical systems and environments. This role requires more than document editing and formatting; the individual will assess documentation for clarity, usability, logical flow, technical accuracy, and audience appropriateness to ensure information is both operationally effective and easily understood by technical and non-technical users alike.

The Senior Technical Writer will work closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to interpret highly technical subject matter and translate it into clear, concise, and structured documentation. The individual will identify documentation gaps, inconsistencies, and process improvement opportunities while helping establish standards and best practices for technical communication across the program.

The Senior Technical Writer will also be the lead of the technical writing team, managing two other technical writers. This manager will provide review of documentation produced by the team prior to submission to management, prioritization of workload, guidance, mentoring and direction, as well as establish deadlines for submissions.

This position requires the ability to synthesize information from multiple sources, understand complex system integrations and workflows, and produce documentation that supports operational continuity, training, deployment, maintenance, and customer understanding.

Key Responsibilities

· Develop, review, and maintain technical documentation including operational procedures, system documentation, deployment guides, training materials, user manuals, white papers, and technical reports.

· Evaluate documentation for clarity, completeness, usability, consistency, and logical flow to ensure content effectively supports operational and customer needs.

· Collaborate with engineers, developers, operational staff, and subject matter experts to gather, interpret, and translate complex technical information for diverse audiences.

· Analyze existing documentation and recommend improvements to organization, structure, formatting, communication methods, and overall user experience.

· Ensure documentation accurately reflects system functionality, integrations, dependencies, and operational processes.

· Develop and maintain documentation standards, templates, style guidance, and best practices to improve consistency and quality across deliverables.

· Create and maintain diagrams, graphics, workflows, and visual aids to support technical documentation and training materials.

· Provide recommendations to program teams and customers regarding documentation formats, delivery methods, communication channels, and knowledge management approaches.

· Support training development efforts, including multimedia and interactive learning content where applicable.

Requirements

· Experience developing, editing, and producing complex technical documentation, reports, manuals, procedures, and instructional materials.

· Strong ability to evaluate documentation from both technical and end-user perspectives to improve readability, organization, and effectiveness.

· Experience translating complex technical concepts and system interactions into clear and understandable documentation.

· Experience working with style guides, document standards, and formatting requirements for technical publications.

· Experience developing diagrams, workflows, graphics, and visual documentation artifacts.

· Ability to interpret engineering drawings, system architecture, and technical specifications into written documentation.

· Experience with graphics, multimedia, audio/video editing, or eLearning development tools, preferably Adobe Captivate.

· Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills with exceptional attention to detail.

· Ability to independently manage documentation efforts and prioritize multiple deliverables in a fast-paced environment.

Other Requirements

· 8+ years of experience in technical writing, technical editing, documentation development, or knowledge management.

· Experience supporting government organizations or government contract environments.

· Experience supporting complex technical systems, integrations, or operational environments preferred.

· Previous SharePoint administration or documentation repository management experience is a plus.
