Senior Engineering Manager - Civil Space, Structural & Aero-Thermal (Onsite)

RTX, Collins Aerospace is a leader in technologically advanced, intelligent solutions that help redefine the aerospace and defense industry. Civil Space in Collins Aerospace Mission Systems is seeking a senior engineering manager to lead a multidisciplinary team of structural analysts and aero-thermal fluids engineers supporting multiple programs, product development, and continuous improvement initiatives. The candidate will lead in a matrix organization with experience in static, dynamic, and fracture analysis of complex mechanical and electro-mechanical systems, and will be a hands-on engineering leader focused on talent development and design solutions for mission critical spaceflight applications.

What You Will Do
  • Lead an experienced, empowered team comprised of structural analysts and aero-thermal fluids engineers with various skillsets, supporting multiple programs in different stages of design, development, build, test, and verification
  • Provide leadership, training, coaching, and technical oversight of the detailed stress and aero-thermal analysis of complex structures used in human spaceflight mechanical and electromechanical applications
  • Lead the team in static and dynamic stress analysis (Ansys, Patran/Nastran and closed form solutions), fracture analysis (NASGRO), margin of safety and fatigue calculations, occasional nonlinear analysis, support of vibration and shock testing, CFD, thermal and performance analysis
  • Provide occasional expert technical guidance and support to development and production programs
  • Develop and enact professional and technical development plans, and succession plans
  • Perform staffing coordination and employee skill development to ensure suitable skill mix, including hiring and performance development
  • Collaborate with stakeholders (Chief Engineers, Program Managers, Senior Engineering Leadership, etc.) to ensure program goals are met
  • Ensure adherence to department and company policies and standards, ethics and regulatory compliance, and contractual specifications
  • Provide recommendations and implement continuous improvements
Qualifications You Must Have
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 10 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience
  • This position is considered safety sensitive in accordance with NASA Guidelines; candidate will be subject to drug and alcohol testing per NASA’s regulation SUBPART 1835.5

  • Leader with a demonstrated record of success leading engineering teams, managing and/or performing on a multidisciplinary team of 10+ people
  • Experience in structural analysis, random vibration and shock testing of space-qualified ECLSS, thermal management, or similar complex electro-mechanical systems and components
  • Experience in CFD, thermal, and performance analysis of space-qualified ECLSS and thermal management systems and components
  • Solid understanding of material behaviors in the linear and non-linear range
  • Experience with project, program, and/or task planning and coordination
  • Strong knowledge of spaceflight hardware design process, including analysis & support information for mechanical and electro-mechanical component and assembly design processes, metal and composite structures, mechanical materials, and physical testing
  • Experience interpreting test results vs analytical models (test vs FEM)
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task with focus on daily issues and longer-term strategies
  • Interpersonal skills with experience in employee management, coaching, and mentoring
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability and creative problem-solving
  • Adaptability to changing priorities in a dynamic environment
