What is a Senior DFT engineer?

Senior DFT (Design for Test) Engineers are experienced professionals who specialize in designing and implementing testability features in integrated circuits (ICs) or systems-on-chip (SoCs). Their primary goal is to ensure that chips can be efficiently and thoroughly tested during manufacturing to detect and diagnose defects. They work on techniques such as scan insertion, built-in self-test (BIST), boundary scan, and test compression. Senior DFT Engineers typically collaborate with design, verification, and manufacturing teams to improve test coverage and reduce costs. Their expertise is crucial for delivering high-quality semiconductor products.

What are some common challenges Senior DFT engineers face when integrating DFT methodologies into complex chip designs?

Senior DFT Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing test coverage with minimal impact on area, performance, and power consumption. Integrating scan chains, boundary scan, and built-in self-test (BIST) requires close collaboration with RTL designers and verification teams to ensure testability features are implemented without introducing timing violations or design bottlenecks. Additionally, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of industry-standard DFT tools and methodologies, and managing tight project timelines while ensuring high-quality deliverables, are ongoing aspects of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior DFT engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior DFT Engineer, you need deep expertise in digital design, test methodologies, and semiconductor fundamentals, typically supported by a degree in electrical or computer engineering and several years of related experience. Proficiency with EDA tools such as Synopsys Tetramax, Mentor Tessent, and scripting languages like Python or TCL is essential, alongside knowledge of industry standards like IEEE 1149.1 (JTAG). Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and collaborative communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure robust test coverage, efficient debugging, and successful delivery of complex integrated circuits in high-stakes environments.

What is the difference between Senior Dft Engineer vs Dft Engineer?

AspectSenior Dft EngineerDft Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electronics/Embedded Systems, relevant certificationsBachelor's in Electronics/Embedded Systems, entry-level certifications

Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

The main difference between a Senior Dft Engineer and a Dft Engineer lies in experience, responsibilities, and expertise. Senior Dft Engineers typically have more years of experience, lead complex DFT (Design for Test) projects, and mentor junior staff. Dft Engineers are often entry to mid-level professionals focused on executing DFT tasks under supervision. Both roles are vital in electronics manufacturing, but the senior position involves greater leadership and strategic planning.

Job description

Job Title: Senior Digital Design Engineer

Primary Location: Chandler, Arizona, USA

Role Summary

Lead digital architecture, design, verification, and implementation of next-generation Power Management ICs (PMICs) for automotive and industrial applications. Drive product execution from concept through RTL development, integration, silicon validation, qualification, and production release. Collaborate across analog, verification, validation, subsystem, SoC, applications, systems, product definition, and customer-facing teams to deliver high-quality mixed-signal solutions.

Job Responsibilities

Review product requirements, IP architecture specifications, programming models, microarchitecture, interfaces, and implementation plans for automotive and industrial PMIC applications. Define and implement digital architectures for mixed-signal PMICs, ensuring alignment with system, performance, quality, reliability, safety, power, and area requirements. Lead digital design activities from architecture definition through RTL development, integration, synthesis, timing closure, low-power implementation, silicon bring-up, and production release. Design and develop digital control, monitoring, telemetry, diagnostics, configuration, protection, power sequencing, and fault management functions for PMIC and power conversion products. Develop and review RTL, microarchitecture, and design specifications using Verilog/SystemVerilog and industry-standard design and quality checking tools. Drive verification strategy and execution, including test planning, simulation, formal verification, coverage analysis, regression management, and achievement of NXP quality and maturity standards. Deliver complete IP solutions, including RTL, verification collateral, supporting documentation, and requirements traceability from specification through implementation. Track development metrics including milestones, code and functional coverage, defect resolution, and compliance with design requirements. Support silicon debug, characterization, qualification, reliability validation, and production ramp activities. Mentor junior engineers and drive continuous improvement in design methodologies, automation flows, and engineering best practices.

Job Qualification

M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field required. Minimum 10 years of experience in digital IC design and development, including technical leadership and architecture responsibilities. Strong understanding of digital design fundamentals, finite state machines, clock-domain crossing, reset architecture, and low-power design techniques. Expertise in RTL design using Verilog/SystemVerilog for complex digital and mixed-signal ICs. Experience with synthesis, static timing analysis, equivalence checking, DFT, and physical implementation flows. Strong knowledge of modern verification methodologies, including UVM, assertions, formal verification, and coverage-driven verification. Experience developing digital controllers for PMICs, power management systems, automotive electronics, or industrial applications is highly desirable. Proficiency with industry-standard EDA tools from Cadence, Synopsys, and Siemens EDA. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop innovative solutions for complex technical challenges. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven ability to lead cross-functional teams in a fast-paced product development environment.
