What is the difference between Senior Data Visualization vs Data Analyst?

AspectSenior Data VisualizationData Analyst
Required SkillsAdvanced data visualization tools, storytelling, designData manipulation, basic visualization, statistical analysis
Work EnvironmentDesign-focused, cross-functional teamsData-focused, business intelligence teams
CertificationsData visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI)Excel, SQL, basic analytics certifications

Senior Data Visualization roles focus on creating compelling visual stories from complex data, often requiring advanced design and storytelling skills. Data Analysts perform broader data analysis, including data cleaning, statistical analysis, and reporting. While both roles work with data, Senior Data Visualization emphasizes visual communication, whereas Data Analysts focus on data interpretation and insights.

Is data visualization in high demand?

Data visualization is in high demand across industries as organizations seek to interpret large data sets effectively. Senior data visualization professionals with skills in tools like Tableau, Power BI, or D3.js are increasingly sought after to support data-driven decision making.

Is data visualization a good career?

Data visualization is a valuable career in data analysis and business intelligence, involving creating visual representations of data using tools like Tableau, Power BI, or Python. It offers opportunities across industries, often requiring strong analytical skills and knowledge of data tools, with demand expected to grow as organizations rely more on data-driven decision making.

What is a Senior Data Visualization specialist?

A Senior Data Visualization specialist is an experienced professional who designs, builds, and manages advanced visual representations of data to help organizations make informed decisions. They work with complex datasets, use tools like Tableau, Power BI, or D3.js, and collaborate with data analysts, engineers, and business stakeholders. Their responsibilities often include translating data insights into clear dashboards, interactive reports, and visual stories that communicate trends, patterns, and actionable intelligence. In addition to technical skills, they often mentor junior team members and contribute to setting best practices in visualization and data storytelling.

Is 40 too late for data science?

Age is not a barrier to becoming a senior data visualization professional or entering data science. Many individuals successfully transition into data roles later in their careers by acquiring relevant skills such as programming, statistics, and data tools, often through online courses or certifications. Experience, continuous learning, and a strong portfolio are more important than age in this field.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Data Visualization professionals when collaborating with non-technical stakeholders?

Senior Data Visualization professionals often encounter challenges when translating complex data insights into visuals that are easily understood by non-technical stakeholders. It’s crucial to balance accuracy and clarity, ensuring that visuals tell a compelling story without overwhelming the audience with technical jargon. Effective communication and active listening are key, as is iterating on visual prototypes based on stakeholder feedback. Building strong relationships with cross-functional teams helps ensure that the final product meets both business objectives and user needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Data Visualization specialist, and why are they important?

To excel as a Senior Data Visualization specialist, you need expertise in data analysis, design principles, and proficiency with data visualization concepts, usually backed by a degree in data science, statistics, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Tableau, Power BI, D3.js, and programming languages such as Python or R is commonly required. Strong communication, storytelling ability, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills for conveying complex data insights to diverse audiences. These competencies ensure that data-driven findings are accessible, actionable, and valuable to stakeholders across the organization.

Will AI replace data analyst?

AI tools can automate routine data processing and visualization tasks, but senior data visualization professionals are essential for interpreting complex data, designing effective visualizations, and providing strategic insights. AI complements these roles by enhancing efficiency, but human expertise remains critical for nuanced analysis and decision-making. Skills in data storytelling and proficiency with visualization software like Tableau or Power BI are valuable in this evolving environment.

Job description

***UNITED STATES CITIZENSHIP REQUIRED***

Overview

Tatitlek provides Information Technology Operations and Maintenance Support (ITO&MS) for the BEP Chief Information Officer (CIO) Directorate’s Office of Information Technology Operations (OITO) in support of BEP’s printing services mission. These services are provided 24/7.

We are seeking a Senior Data Analyst to support leadership in making informed, data-driven decisions. This role will focus on analyzing operational and performance data, developing key performance indicators (KPIs), identifying trends and risks, and translating complex data into actionable insights for executive stakeholders.

This is a high-visibility role that directly supports strategic planning, operational performance improvement, and executive decision-making.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Decision Support & Strategic Analysis

  • Partner with CIO/OITO leadership to identify key business questions and performance objectives.
  • Develop and maintain KPIs aligned to strategic and operational goals.
  • Analyze operational, financial, and IT performance data to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.
  • Conduct scenario and impact analysis to support leadership decisions.

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Extract, clean, and analyze data from multiple systems and sources.
  • Develop recurring reports and executive dashboards using tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
  • Perform root cause analysis on operational issues and performance gaps.
  • Ensure consistency and reliability of reporting metrics.

Executive Communication & Data Storytelling

  • Translate analytical findings into clear, concise insights tailored to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Prepare executive briefings, summaries, and visualizations to inform leadership discussions.
  • Present findings and recommendations to senior stakeholders.

Process & Performance Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to streamline reporting processes and improve data integrity.
  • Support data governance and metric standardization efforts.
  • Recommend performance improvements based on analysis.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with cross-functional IT, operations, and program teams to ensure data accuracy and alignment.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership on data interpretation and performance measurement.

What Success Looks Like in This Role

  • Leadership receives clear, actionable insights — not just data.
  • KPIs are defined, standardized, and consistently reported.
  • Decision-making improves through better visibility into performance trends and risks.
  • Reporting becomes proactive rather than reactive.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics, Business, Information Systems, Statistics, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 5–7 years of experience in data analytics, business intelligence, or decision support roles.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and data querying.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, or similar).
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting executive or senior leadership with data-driven insights.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to translate complex data into clear business recommendations.
  • Experience working in a government or IT operations environment preferred.
  • Familiarity with data governance, compliance, and reporting best practices.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
  • Occasionally lift/move up to 25 lbs.
  • Must possess good vision and hearing capabilities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work Environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Job is performed in an office setting with exposure to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, mouse and multi-line telephone system.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFYING FACTORS:

As a condition of employment, must pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results.
