What Does a Security Operations Manager Do?

As a security operations manager, you develop and implement strategies to help protect the assets of your company. As part of your duties, you may determine the best protocol for each situation, manage the hiring and training process for other security personnel, and otherwise oversee daily security needs. Many details of this job depend on the security threats your employer faces. For example, retail stores frequently face problems with theft while research companies may be more concerned with the safety of digitally-archived information. Many security operations managers focus on physical threats and collaborate with systems administrators and other computer-focused personnel to secure digital assets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Security Operations Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Security Operations Manager, you need expertise in risk assessment, incident response, and security policy development, often supported by a degree in cybersecurity or a related field. Familiarity with security information and event management (SIEM) tools, intrusion detection systems, and certifications like CISSP or CISM is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential for managing teams and responding effectively to security incidents. These skills are crucial for protecting organizational assets, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining a proactive security posture.

What are some typical challenges a Security Operations Manager faces when coordinating between internal teams and external partners?

A Security Operations Manager often navigates challenges such as ensuring clear communication of security protocols between internal IT teams and third-party vendors, aligning security practices with organizational goals, and managing incident responses across multiple stakeholders. Balancing business needs with security compliance requirements can also be complex, especially when integrating new technologies or services. Effective collaboration and establishing well-defined escalation paths are key to overcoming these challenges and maintaining a resilient security posture.

Job description

TARGET SALARY: Up to 185000.00 DOQ

Who we are

Infinite Campus is an educational software company that helps K12 school districts manage their day-to-day operations. Weโ€™ve been around for over 30 plus years and are the most trusted name in student information. Our customers include school districts across the United States and our products support more than ten million students.

What youโ€™ll do

The Manager, Security Operations will lead the SecOps function by overseeing application security, security monitoring tools, compliance initiatives, and incident response activities across the organization. This role manages a small cross-functional security team (SecOps engineers, AppSec engineers, and a compliance analyst), sets and communicates the security roadmap, and partners closely with infrastructure, development, CX leadership, and corporate IT to strengthen the companyโ€™s overall security posture. The manager will drive major initiatives such as continuous application security scanning and remediation, SOC 2 and regulatory audit support, and the ongoing FedRAMP/GovRAMP efforts, while also serving as a liaison during security incidentsโ€”potentially acting as Incident Commander. In addition, the role owns elements of the security budget, supports tool strategy (e.g., monitoring and vulnerability platforms), and promotes a strong security-aware culture across the SaaS organization.

Who you are

This position is best suited for a technically strong security leader who combines hands-on security operations experience with people-management capability and cross-organizational influence. The ideal candidate is someone comfortable operating in a fast-moving SaaS environment, able to guide engineers while collaborating with executive stakeholders and external auditors, and capable of balancing strategic planning with tactical execution. They should be confident leading compliance-driven initiatives such as SOC 2 and FedRAMP, coordinating responses to active security events, and maintaining credibility with both technical teams and business leadership. A proactive communicator who can operate independently, prioritize effectively under pressure, and sustain long-term security programs will be especially successful in this role.

Your skill-set

The role requires a blend of leadership, technical security expertise, and compliance experience. Core skills include security operations and application security knowledge, incident response coordination, vulnerability management, and familiarity with enterprise security tooling and monitoring platforms. Strong collaboration and communication skills are essential for working with development teams, infrastructure partners, auditors, executives, and external stakeholders. The candidate should also demonstrate experience with cloud platforms, distributed systems environments, containerization, networking fundamentals, and scripting or development concepts, along with the ability to manage roadmaps, budgets, and staff development. Certifications such as CISSP and engagement with professional security communities are highly desirable, as is experience supporting regulated frameworks like SOC 2 or FedRAMP.
