Introduction
The Prince William Public Library is looking for a dynamic, customer service superstar to step into a Library Assistant role at the Bull Run Library! We need an energetic and dedicated individual who thrives on providing outstanding support to both our staff and the vibrant, diverse community we serve. This essential position is a fantastic launchpad for a successful career and offers a mix of independent and team-based work.
About This Role:
The Library Assistant plays a vital role in connecting our patrons with essential resources. You will:
  • Deliver outstanding customer service by fielding inquiries, providing informed guidance, and directing patrons to the right resources.
  • Clearly interpret and explain complex library policies and procedures to ensure patron understanding.
  • Process financial transactions by accurately collecting fees and operating the cash register.
  • Support patrons with technology, including troubleshooting and assisting with printers, copiers, and fax machines.
  • Maintain the library collection through meticulous shelving, shelf-reading, handling hold requests, and removing damaged materials.
  • Check materials in and out and efficiently locate items upon request.
  • Manage patron data by accurately creating, updating, and maintaining records within the library's database system.
  • Actively participate in PWC and library training sessions and departmental meetings.
  • Represent the library by engaging in local outreach events and programs.
  • Thrive in both independent and collaborative work environments as a versatile member of the team.

Minimum Requirements: 8th-grade education and 0-12 months of customer service experience.
Preferences:
  • Experience working in a library, retail, clerical, or help desk providing face-to-face and by phone customer service in a public setting
  • Experience using and troubleshooting standard office equipment: computers, fax machines, and copiers.
  • Experience using and troubleshooting various technologies (smart phones, tablets, e-readers, etc.) and resources, including databases and library apps.
  • Experience using software and databases
  • Cash handling experience
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (TEAMS, SharePoint, MS Word, Excel)
  • Scheduling flexibility

Special Requirements:
The position may require travel to other branches within the system. A DMV check will be conducted for employees who drive while on County business.
Work Schedule:
This is a permanent part-time position that requires 20 hours of work per week. Flexibility in scheduling is essential.
The scheduled hours will align with our operating hours: Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Thursday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Sunday, 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The role includes one evening shift and rotating weekends. The specific hours will be determined based on the library's needs.
Hiring Salary Range: $ $19.41 - 24.88 / hourly
