Description
The City of Norfolk's Department of Libraries is currently seeking a Library Associate I for its Richard A. Tucker Branch. This position assists with the daily operations of the library. Provides customer service to patrons, technological assistance and performs readers' advisory. Is responsible for planning and conducting educational, cultural and recreational programs for adults and families. Maintains the adult book collections and adult spaces at the library branch.

Departmental Hiring Salary: $47,262.29
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
  • Plans and promotes programs for adults and families
  • Plans and conducts YOUmedia programs for tweens/teens
  • Provides outreach to community and other local organizations
  • Maintains and monitors adult areas in the library branch
  • Provides excellent customer service; assists library patrons with reader's advisory
  • Assists in building and maintaining the library's adult collections
  • Provides regular coverage of Public Service desks
  • Provides technological assistance to the public with computers, copier, and scanner
  • Prepares book displays
  • Performs administrative duties by preparing and analyzing statistical reports
  • Participates in committees and attend training related to the job
  • Helps supervise part-time employees and volunteers
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products and electronic library applications such as Libby and Hoopla
  • Ability to lead and work in a team setting
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Education/Experience
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
One year of experience in library or related services. Experience developing and implementing programs in a library or other educational setting.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Additional Information & Requirements

Work Hours: 40 hours/week; evenings and weekends required
  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.
  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.
  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
