The City of Virginia Beach Library Department is seeking a full-time Library Program Specialist I -Youth The successful candidate should fully embrace the library's commitment to "inspire learning, ignite imagination, create possibilities, and encourage understanding" through innovative programming and strong community engagement.

Library Program Specialist I- Youth duties include but are not limited to:
Planning, marketing, presenting, and evaluating specialized and complex programs and classes that reflect the library's strategic initiatives and increase public awareness of library services and resources.
Collaborating with colleagues to develop and present programs, share resources, and communicate trends in youth and technology services.
Providing information and readers' advisory services to library customers through reference interviews, research, and bibliographic instruction which requires a broad knowledge of print, non-print and electronic resources.
Working with community partners to ensure programming, resources, and materials to support lifelong learning.
Promoting the library's collection and services through programs, trainings, and outreach.
Knowledge of social, cognitive, emotional, and educational stages of youth
Researching, designing, and providing training and instruction to staff and volunteers to orient them to their tasks and responsibilities.
Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
Aligning all services with library policies and procedures and consistently meets the needs of the community.
Collecting and inputting data that will measure the impact of services.
Maintains an ongoing knowledge of reading trends
Checking materials in and out and registering customers to maintain an accurate database.
Performing cash handling duties.
Instructing and assisting customers in the use of the library catalog, electronic resources, library materials, and equipment. Interprets, explains, and applies library policies and procedures to customers and staff.
May be required to oversee the library branch and staff in the absence of supervisory personnel.
• Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs. Performance Standards

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: Requires a combination of higher education and/or experience equivalent to five (5) years, one (1) of which must have been in direct delivery of information services, in a library related field which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs.

Three (3) years of experience in customer service and/or public relations field.
One (1) year of experience working with youth.
Experience conducting reference interviews.
Experience in program development/instructional delivery for youth.
Experience using electronic resources, mobile devices and library technology.
Experience collaborating with teams.
Experience gathering information and performing research.
One (1) year of experience as a bookstore clerk and/or in a Library related field.
Experience providing outreach services to youth.
