Transylvania County EMS is the primary 911 emergency medical services provider for Transylvania County, located in the scenic mountains of Western North Carolina. Headquarters is located in Brevard, NC, with a secondary station in the Quebec community.
We operate:
  • Three ALS Paramedic ambulances during the day
  • Two ALS Paramedic ambulances at night
  • An on-duty Supervisor assigned to an additional ambulance for enhanced response and transport capabilities.
Transylvania County has a year-round population of approximately 35,000, which more than doubles in the summer due to its popularity among tourists, seasonal residents, and summer camp attendees. The county is home to Pisgah National Forest, DuPont State Recreational Forest, and Gorges State Park, offering world-class opportunities for hiking, biking, climbing, fishing, horseback riding, kayaking, and more.
We are currently accepting applications for 2 full-time Paramedic position. Applicants must hold a current North Carolina Paramedic credential. Eligible applicants will be contacted with further details regarding the hiring process. All final candidates will undergo pre-employment screenings conducted by Transylvania County Human Resources.

Starting salary will be determined by Transylvania County Human Resources based on experience and education submitted with your application, so please list all applicable education and experience.

Essential Functions
  • Provides emergency and non-emergency care to residents and visitors of the County; operates equipment and administers emergency medical care; transports victims to emergency care facility; and documents findings.
  • Responds to emergency calls which might require advanced life support.
  • Operate county vehicles in a safe and efficient manner while traveling in and out of the County in emergency and non-emergency modes.
  • Provides emergency medical care in accordance with established guidelines and written verbal instructions from physicians.
  • Determines extent of illness or injury and establishes priorities for required care.
  • Transmits vital patient information and telemetry data to receiving medical care facility.
  • Provides various treatment techniques including airway management, intravenous therapy, drug administration, cardiac monitoring and defibrillation and electrocardiogram strip interpretation. Provides appropriate medical care and procedures at the necessary ALS and/or BLS level.
  • Observes patient in route and administers additional care as needed.
  • Completes and files documentation on calls.
  • Performs routine and inter-facility/palliative care transport of patients.
  • Inspects and performs preventive maintenance on assigned apparatus and equipment and assists in cleaning station and grounds.
  • Participates in continuing education activities and maintaining certification hours.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Participates in public relations functions; serves on standby crew for special events as needed
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles of anatomy and physiology.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency care, including diagnosis, proper treatment and transportation.
  • Knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in the emergency care of patients and victims of accidents.
  • Knowledge of the street and road system and physical layout of the County.
  • Knowledge of ESO Data software.
  • Skill in assessing a victim's condition and applying emergency medical care.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to coordinate and communicate effectively with other emergency services agencies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the general public.
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, associates, patients and their families.

Education and Experience
Minimum Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or its equivalent and required licenses or certifications.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
  • BCLS
  • ACLS
  • PHTLS/ITLS Provider Certifications.
  • Instructor certifications preferred.
  • NCOEMS Paramedic credential.
  • NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800 Certifications.
  • CEVO Certification.
  • HazMat Level I Responder Certification.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License
  • Successful completion of SBI background check with required fingerprinting by Sheriff Office.
  • Successful completion Transylvania County standard background check
  • Successful completion drug screening
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Medical Insurance
  • $50 per month premium paid by the employee / county pay remaining portion
  • Employee can cover children/spouse/family at their own cost for medical coverage $77.56/$265.92/ $426.28 per month. In addition to the $50 per month for the employee.
  • Employees may qualify for a $50 per month discount. Beginning in 2016, employees must participate in the employee health screening including a base line physical and meet 2 of the 4 accountability standards set forth by the Board of Commissioners to receive the discount.
  1. Waist circumference abdomen cir < 40" male or <35" female; or improve 5%
  2. Blood Pressure <140/90 mmhg; or improve 10/5 mmh; or improve 5%
  3. Cholesterol Ratio <5.5; or improve by 10; or improve 5%
  4. Hemoglobin A1c < = 6.8; or improve 5%
  • Premiums may be pre-taxed which is a savings to your taxes, but if you pre-tax premiums you can't take the costs off of your taxes.

  1. Plan 1 - Co-Pay Plan for In-Network- $40 Copays for Primary Care Visit, $80 Specialist Visit, Urgent Care and RX. All other services apply to $1,500 deductible, then 80/20 co-insurance up to $2,000 out-of-pocket maximum. See Plan 1 document for more detailed information.
  2. Plan 2 - Deductible Plan for In-Network except $25 co-pay for Primary Care Visit and RX. All other services apply to $1,000 deductible, then 80/20 co-insurance up to $2,000 out-of-pocket maximum. See Plan 2 document for more detailed information.
  • Routine eye examinations only are covered annually for a BCBSNC network provider.
  • Prescription Drugs - 4 Tiers - $5 generic/ $45 preferred / $60.00 non preferred /4th Tier is 25% up to a max of $100.00./ Mail order is available @ 2.5 co-pays for a 90 day supply. 90 day supply at pharmacy.

Supplemental Insurance Products -
Mark III Brokerage assists the county to provide a full-array of supplemental products such as Health and Dependent Care FSA accounts, Cancer Policy, Short-term and Long-term Disability, Term Life, Universal Life, Accident or Illness Policy, Hospital Indemnity, and a Vision Plan. The Supplemental Products are available during original employment or open enrollment in May/June of each year to employees at group rates and premiums are paid through payroll deduction. Policies will be effective on July 1.

Electronic Payroll Deposit -
County Employees are paid bi-weekly, 26 times per year. We deposit your payroll check. Deposits are available to all banks and credit unions. Deposits are made, so you can have access to your funds by Friday morning (payday). You can divide your payroll into two accounts, one you must specify the amount to go into and the second account would receive the balance.
Retirement -

New Year's Day, Martin Luther King's Birthday, Easter Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day and the Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve Day, Christmas Day and the day after Christmas.
Paid Vacation/Annual Leave-
  • 1-2 years = 10 days; 3-5 years = 12 days, 5-10 years = 15 days, 10-15 years = 18 days, 15-20 years = 20 days; 20 + years = 24 days. Vacation is accrued bi-weekly, therefore you receive 1/26th each payroll.
  • You may accrue vacation and carry over up to 30 days. Thereafter, at the end of the calendar year, if you have more than the 30 days, the excess converts to sick leave.
  • You may cash in up to one week of vacation annually, in lieu of time away from work.
  • In extreme situations employees may request to transfer vacation leave to other employees. Requests must be in writing to the County Manager and must be approved in advance.
  • Vacation should be scheduled in advance as requested by your supervisor. Complete proper leave sheets.
  • If you have prior active service in the NC Retirement System, Transylvania County will give you credit for those years of service toward accrual of vacation/annual leave.
