COMPENSATION
Lifeguard: $16.96 - $20.62 per hour*
*New rate of $25.00 per hour pending City Council approval

LIFEGUARD
THE POSITION
Under general supervision, the Lifeguard will ensure safe use of the pool, aquatic facility and general safety of children; supervise conduct of pool patrons; enforce swimming pool rules and respond to emergency situations as required; administer First Aid, CPR, and perform other lifesaving activities. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining and work safely with materials and equipment, maintain accurate files and records, and perform other related duties as assigned.
This is a non-benefited, at-will part-time position with working hours to be assigned at the discretion of the Recreation Department, limited up to 960 hours per fiscal year. Employees may be assigned to work on weekends, evenings and holidays.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Observes and assesses swimmers in the pool area from an assigned station to identify and prevent unsafe conditions or potential hazards.
  2. Enforces facility rules regarding use of the pool, restrooms, and general public area.
  3. Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning; administers first aid and emergency care when needed.
  4. Performs general pool and facility maintenance each day, including daily opening and closing procedures of the facility.
  5. Determines and records chlorine and pH value of water during daily activities; monitors and records water temperatures.
  6. Prepare and maintain records and reports.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of lifeguarding safety policies, water hazards, lifesaving techniques and first aid.
  • Knowledge of standard pool operating procedures.
  • Ability to actively perform safety duties; the safeguarding of individuals, public and property.
  • Ability to effectively interact with City staff, volunteers and the public; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations; respond to all details of an emergency.
  • Ability to assist with daily maintenance of the pool facility.
  • Ability to prepare written reports and records.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience
  • Must be at least 16 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Work Permit if still enrolled in high school

Certifications
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid for the Professional Rescuer

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position requires sitting, standing, walking, swimming for prolonged periods, hearing and speaking clearly, and normal or corrected vision. Other physical demands include bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds, manual dexterity to operate pool equipment, and maintaining calm mental focus during emergency situations.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employee works in an outside aquatics facility environment, in seasonal climate and weather conditions; works with slippery surface conditions, where water and swimming pool chemicals are frequently encountered; and subject to emergency situations. Employee may be exposed to chemicals associated with a swimming pool; and to body fluids with the possibility of communicable disease.
