Job description

Company Description Fly by Night LA is a streetwear apparel brand based in Los Angeles, CA, focused on innovative design and thoughtful construction. The company emphasizes quality, fit, and detail, aiming to create modern garments that balance creativity with functionality. Team members collaborate closely across design, production, and sourcing to bring collections from concept to finished product. The environment is fast-paced and hands-on, offering opportunities to contribute directly to the look, feel, and performance of each piece. Joining Fly by Night LA means working in a warehouse/office setting where experimentation, craftsmanship, and problem-solving are highly valued.

Role Description The Apparel Technical Designer is a full-time, on-site role based in Los Angeles, CA. This position is responsible for translating design concepts into production-ready garments through detailed technical packages, fit comments, and construction specifications. Day-to-day tasks include preparing tech packs with measurements, construction details, and trim information; partnering with designers to clarify design intent; and collaborating with pattern makers and factories to ensure accurate execution. The role involves attending and leading fit sessions, evaluating samples on forms or live models, and providing precise fit, pattern, and construction corrections. The Apparel Technical Designer will also maintain and update size standards, track sample progress, troubleshoot production issues, and support continuous improvement in garment quality, consistency, and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Strong technical design skills, including creating detailed tech packs and translating design concepts into clear specifications.
  • Hands-on experience with garment construction and fitting, with the ability to assess fit, balance, and wearability and provide actionable corrections.
  • Proficiency in pattern making or working closely with pattern makers to refine patterns for style, fit, and production feasibility.
  • Ability to apply structural and spatial thinking, including basic architecture or product-structure knowledge, to garment engineering and problem-solving.
  • Relevant experience in apparel technical design for fashion or streetwear brands; familiarity with industry-standard software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Excel, PLM systems) is highly desirable.
  • Strong attention to detail, numerical accuracy in measurements and grading, and ability to manage multiple styles and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with design, production, and external vendors; ability to present fit comments and technical feedback clearly.
  • Associate or bachelorโ€™s degree in Fashion Design, Technical Design, Apparel Production, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in the apparel industry.
