What does a search manager do?

A search manager oversees the planning, execution, and optimization of search engine marketing strategies, including paid and organic search campaigns. They analyze data, use tools like Google Analytics and AdWords, and coordinate with marketing teams to improve search visibility and performance.

How does a search manager typically collaborate with other departments to optimize campaign performance?

Search Managers frequently work cross-functionally, partnering with content, analytics, and creative teams to ensure campaigns are aligned with overall marketing goals. They often collaborate with data analysts to review performance metrics and identify optimization opportunities, as well as with designers to refine ad creatives. Regular communication with account managers and clients is also common to share insights and adjust strategies based on evolving business objectives. This collaborative approach helps ensure that search campaigns are both effective and integrated with broader digital marketing efforts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a search manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Search Manager, you need expertise in search engine marketing (SEM), pay-per-click (PPC) campaign management, data analysis, and a relevant degree in marketing or business. Familiarity with tools such as Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising, Google Analytics, and SEMrush, along with certifications like Google Ads Certification, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and project management skills help drive effective campaigns and foster collaboration across teams. These skills are crucial for optimizing search performance, maximizing ROI, and staying competitive in the rapidly evolving digital marketing landscape.

They manage campaigns on platforms like Google Ads and Bing Ads, analyze performance data, and adjust tactics to improve visibility, traffic, and conversions. Their role often involves keyword research, budget management, ad copywriting, and collaborating with marketing teams to achieve business goals.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Paid Search Manager (Google Ads & Microsoft Ads) based in Netherlands.

Join a remote-first team building and scaling innovative digital products for international markets. In this role, you will take full ownership of paid search acquisition, driving customer growth through data-driven campaign management across Google Ads and Microsoft Ads. Working closely with product, analytics, and growth specialists, you'll shape acquisition strategies from the ground up while managing significant advertising budgets. You'll have the opportunity to influence business performance through continuous experimentation, optimization, and strategic decision-making in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. This position is ideal for a hands-on performance marketing expert who thrives on autonomy, analytical thinking, and measurable business impact.

Accountabilities
  • Own the end-to-end paid search strategy across Google Ads and Microsoft Ads, ensuring sustainable customer acquisition and business growth.
  • Build, launch, manage, and scale search campaigns across multiple international markets while optimizing campaign structure, keyword strategy, bidding, budgeting, and pacing.
  • Monitor and analyze campaign performance using advertising platforms alongside internal business and revenue metrics to drive informed optimization decisions.
  • Continuously improve campaign efficiency through keyword expansion, search query analysis, A/B testing, and ongoing account optimization.
  • Collaborate with product, analytics, and growth teams to improve landing pages, conversion rates, and overall acquisition performance.
  • Ensure accurate conversion tracking while understanding attribution models and validating advertising data against internal reporting systems.
  • Manage account health by overseeing billing, policy compliance, issue resolution, and platform best practices.
  • Present campaign performance, optimization initiatives, and strategic recommendations clearly to internal stakeholders.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 4 years of hands-on experience managing paid search campaigns in a performance marketing environment.
  • Advanced expertise with Google Ads and practical experience managing Microsoft Ads campaigns.
  • Proven experience managing substantial advertising budgets while maintaining strong return on investment and acquisition efficiency.
  • Deep understanding of campaign architecture, keyword management, bidding strategies, automation, budget pacing, and optimization techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of conversion tracking, server-side tracking, attribution models, and performance measurement methodologies.
  • Experience validating advertising platform data against internal analytics, business intelligence, or backend reporting.
  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to make fast, data-driven decisions based on performance insights.
  • Experience working with B2C subscription businesses, digital products, SaaS, or large-scale e-commerce organizations.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with Meta Ads, TikTok Ads, SQL, BI tools, advertising policy management, or multi-entity account structures is considered an advantage.
Benefits
  • Fully remote position within Europe.
  • Full-time B2B contract.
  • Flexible working hours with a strong focus on autonomy and ownership.
  • 22 paid vacation days in addition to local public holidays.
  • Opportunity to join and help shape a newly established business unit from its earliest stages.
  • High level of responsibility with direct influence on product growth and acquisition strategy.
  • Close collaboration with experienced product, analytics, and growth professionals.
  • Dynamic, fast-paced environment focused on experimentation, innovation, and measurable results.
