Outside Sales

Reports To: Branch Manager


Summary

This position is responsible for selling company products and services to new and existing customers by developing, managing, and expanding relationships with key decision-makers within the customerโ€™s organization. The Outside Sales Representative drives revenue growth through territory management, prospecting, and face-to-face customer engagement.


Essential Functions and Duties
  1. Develop and maintain strong relationships with customers through regular in-person visits, phone calls, and electronic communication.

  2. Identify, pursue, and develop new customer accounts while expanding business within existing accounts.

  3. Assess customer needs and recommend appropriate products and solutions based on application, usage, and business requirements.

  4. Provide product recommendations and technical support to resolve customer challenges, including on-site product demonstrations when appropriate.

  5. Prepare accurate quotes, proposals, drawings, estimates, and/or bids that align with specific customer requirements.

  6. Coordinate closely with Inside Sales, Operations, and Purchasing to ensure accurate order processing and timely delivery.

  7. Provide customers with product samples, catalogs, and supporting documentation as needed.

  8. Assess customer and market needs, competitive landscapes, and unserved or underserved opportunities to develop differentiated value propositions.

  9. Meet or exceed departmental objectives and sales goals on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.

  10. Maintain market position in core product and service lines while identifying and supporting opportunities for growth.

  11. Maintain accurate documentation of customer interactions, opportunities, and forecasts within company systems.

  12. Demonstrate unwavering support for all safety programs, policies, and initiatives, including leading by example.


Competencies
  1. Knowledge of manufacturing and fastener costing in a production environment, with a proven ability to accurately quote manufactured bolts and nuts.

  2. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.

  3. Ability to present oneself professionally at all times, including clear and concise communication, appropriate dress and grooming, and professional body language.

  4. Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present information, convey facts, and provide recommendations effectively.

  5. Ability to foster and maintain collaborative working relationships both internally and externally.

  6. Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to independently manage priorities and schedules.

  7. Proficiency with computer systems, including ERP systems and Microsoft Office applications.

  8. Strong listening and comprehension skills, including the ability to discern customer needs, anticipate requests, and contribute effectively to discussions with customers and leadership.


Physical and Cognitive Demands

This position requires frequent travel and time spent in customer facilities and field environments. Activities may include walking long distances (including uneven surfaces), climbing stairs, standing for extended periods, and attending customer meetings or industry events. The role also requires the ability to lift boxes, transport samples, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand as needed.

Cognitive abilities required include deductive reasoning, information ordering, oral comprehension, oral expression, problem sensitivity, written comprehension, and written expression.


Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Work hours and days may vary based on workload and customer needs. Travel will be required on a consistent basis, including both pre-planned and short-notice travel within the assigned territory.


Required Education and Experience
  1. Three (3) years of industrial sales experience.

  2. Two (2) to three (3) years of experience or training in industrial wholesale distribution, preferably within the metal fastener industry.

  3. Two (2) to three (3) years of outside sales experience.


Preferred Education and Experience
  1. Two (2) to three (3) years of experience in a similar role preferred.

  2. Manufacturing and sales organization experience a plus.
