Job description

The Baillie Group has been a trusted leader in the hardwood lumber industry since 1923. With multiple facilities across North America, we are committed to quality, continuous improvement, and long-term partnerships. Our Smyrna, NY sawmill is currently seeking a skilled Maintenance Technician to support safe, efficient, and reliable operations.

Position Overview:
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems within the sawmill. This role requires a strong technical background, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.ย 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on electrical/electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems and components.
  • Apply knowledge of electrical/electronic and mechanical principles to diagnose equipment malfunctions and restore equipment to proper operation.
  • Provide skilled maintenance support across all manufacturing areas, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot and repair a wide range of equipment, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), drives, gauges, power supplies, and test equipment.
  • Assist in the installation, modification, and upgrade of machinery and support systems.
  • Document maintenance activities and communicate effectively with operations staff to ensure issues are resolved in a timely manner.
  • Follow all company safety protocols and maintain a safe, organized work environment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the needs of the sawmill.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; a 2-year degree/certificate in electrical/electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic fields preferred.
  • Previous experience in electrical, welding, or mechanical work strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, industrial/manufacturing environment.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to quickly identify and resolve issues.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team, including strong communication with operators and supervisors.
  • Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. and working in varying environmental conditions.
  • Willing to train on 1st shift, but this will be a 2nd shift role
