Field Operations Manager - Plumbing

Position Overview

As Field Operations Manager - Plumbing, you'll provide senior leadership and strategic oversight for field operations teams across commercial plumbing, HVAC projects, ensuring exceptional safety, quality, productivity, profitability, and client satisfaction. Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, you'll manage superintendents, foremen, and field personnel, align with upper management on company goals, optimize labor resources, drive continuous improvement, and foster long-term relationships with internal departments, clients, subcontractors, and vendors. This generic role is designed for any Modigent operating company, empowering your expertise with professional development, cross-functional collaboration, and the opportunity to build high-performing teams that deliver reliable, sustainable mechanical systems nationwide.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage field operations teams (superintendents, foremen, technicians) to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to the highest safety/quality standards.
  • Assign projects, balance workloads, and oversee manpower planning/labor allocation across the portfolio to meet schedule and profitability goals.
  • Collaborate with project operations, preconstruction, and executive leadership to understand company direction, develop labor budgets, schedules, and resource forecasts.
  • Proactively identify risks, opportunities, and solutions; review bid documents, drawings, and scopes to prevent issues and enhance efficiency/value.
  • Track project budgets, labor costs, productivity, and forecasts; submit monthly cost-to-complete analyses and implement measures to increase profitability.
  • Ensure strict adherence to contracts, specifications, company policies, safety requirements, quality standards, and ethical guidelines across all field personnel.
  • Manage reporting processes (crew time, safety/toolbox talks, production, schedule projections) and assure timely, accurate submission.
  • Champion safety culture: enforce PPE usage, coordinate inspections, manage safety expectations, document incidents, and partner with safety teams on protocols/training.
  • Drive quality assurance: conduct site reviews, ensure installations meet/exceed standards, prevent call-backs/warranty issues, and collaborate with quality teams on processes/inspections.
  • Build and develop high-performing teams: hire, train, mentor, set goals, conduct performance reviews, nominate promotions/incentives, and support apprenticeship/talent development.
  • Foster long-term relationships: proactively communicate with internal departments (HR, finance, safety, quality, service, sales, preconstruction, purchasing), clients, subcontractors, and vendors to ensure continuity, growth, and exceptional service.
  • Provide vision for project planning, coordination, sequencing, labor utilization, and continuous improvement; communicate updates/issues to executive leadership.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Yes – Direct leadership and supervision of field operations teams, including superintendents, general foremen, foremen, technicians, and support staff across projects/portfolio; responsible for hiring recommendations, performance evaluations, training/mentoring, promotions/incentives, conflict resolution, labor capacity management, and succession planning to build a high-performing, safety-focused team.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Experience: 8–12+ years of progressive experience in commercial Plumbing amp;HVAC/mechanical construction or related field services, including 5+ years in leadership roles managing field teams, labor forecasting, and multi-project oversight.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent experience with strong technical HVAC knowledge considered.
  • Certifications: OSHA 30-hour, PMP, LEED, or relevant trade certifications a plus; valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
  • Physical Demands: Primarily office-based with frequent job-site visits; ability to walk active construction sites, climb ladders/stairs, lift light materials (plans, laptop), and travel regionally/nationally as needed; standard office mobility for computer work and meetings.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Professional office with hybrid options and active construction sites; exposure to varying weather, noise, dust, heights; must adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed boots) on sites—safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position.
