What are Sales Development Representative (SDR) contract roles?

Sales Development Representative (SDR) contract roles are temporary positions focused on generating and qualifying leads for a company’s sales team. Contract SDRs typically reach out to potential customers, initiate conversations, and set up meetings for account executives. These roles are often project-based and can range from a few months to a year, providing flexibility for both the employer and the employee. Contract positions may offer exposure to different industries and can be a stepping stone to permanent sales roles. The primary goal of an SDR contract role is to drive pipeline growth through effective prospecting.

What is the difference between Sales Development Representative Contract vs Inside Sales Representative?

AspectSales Development Representative ContractInside Sales Representative
CredentialsTypically requires a sales or marketing background, with some roles accepting entry-level candidatesOften requires similar sales experience or related certifications, with a focus on ongoing sales skills
Work EnvironmentUsually in an office or remote setting, focused on lead generation and outreachInvolves client interaction, product demos, and closing sales, often in an office or remote environment
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in tech, SaaS, and B2B industries; used for short-term or project-based rolesWidely used across industries for ongoing sales roles, often full-time

While both roles involve sales activities, a Sales Development Representative Contract primarily focuses on lead generation and prospecting on a temporary or contract basis. In contrast, an Inside Sales Representative typically handles the full sales cycle, including closing deals, often in a permanent position. Understanding these differences helps job seekers align their skills and career goals with the right role.

What are the typical challenges faced by Sales Development Representatives working on a contract basis, and how can they navigate them?

Contract Sales Development Representatives (SDRs) often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new products, learning industry-specific sales tactics, and integrating into established teams. Since contract roles may be shorter-term, building relationships and demonstrating value early on are essential. Successful contract SDRs focus on proactive communication, rapid learning, and leveraging proven outreach techniques to exceed targets and potentially secure longer-term opportunities within the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sales Development Representative (Contract), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Development Representative (Contract), you need strong communication, lead generation, and prospecting skills, often supported by a bachelor's degree or relevant sales experience. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce, email automation tools, and sales engagement platforms is typically required. Outstanding organization, resilience, and the ability to build rapport quickly are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These abilities drive effective pipeline development, enable smooth handoffs to account executives, and directly influence revenue growth.

Netchannels is looking for a talented Sales Development Representative to join the Pixel sales team focused on the Public Sector.
This position is located in Washington DC or Reston, or surrounding areas
About the Role
The Sales Development Representative (SDR) will generate and qualify new Public Sector opportunities for the Google Pixel sales organization, focusing on Federal and State & Local government customers in the mobility marketplace. This role sits at the top of the funnel, turning Marketing Qualified Leads and targeted outbound outreach into high-quality meetings and pipeline for the field sales team.
Key Responsibilities
  • Qualify and develop Marketing Qualified Leads (MQLs) from campaigns, events, and digital programs into sales-ready opportunities for Account Executives.
  • Conduct targeted outbound prospecting into Federal and State & Local agencies using a provided custom slide deck, call scripts, and email templates tailored to Public Sector use cases for Google Pixel.
  • Research and identify key decision makers and influencers within the mobility and Public Sector ecosystem (IT, procurement, program offices, contracting officers, etc.).
  • Navigate the full government buying cycle-from early market research and requirements definition through RFP/RFQ, contract award, and deployment-to time outreach appropriately and position Pixel solutions within existing contract vehicles.
  • Use LinkedIn Sales Navigator to build targeted prospect lists, map accounts, and execute multi-touch outreach sequences across phone, email, and social channels.
  • Clearly articulate the value proposition of Google Pixel and related mobility solutions for Public Sector workloads, security, and mission use cases in introductory calls and presentations using provided script.
  • Schedule and coordinate qualified discovery calls, demos, and briefings for the Public Sector sales team, ensuring tight hand-off and thorough opportunity notes.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of all activities, contacts, and opportunities within Salesforce (SFDC) or equivalent CRM, following established data hygiene standards.
  • Track and report on key SDR metrics such as calls, emails, meetings set, conversion rates, and sourced pipeline, and provide feedback to marketing on lead quality and campaign performance.
  • Collaborate closely with marketing and sales leadership to refine messaging, targeting, and cadences specific to Public Sector mobility opportunities.

Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in a Sales Development, Business Development, inside sales, or similar role at a technology company (hardware, or telecom).
  • Demonstrated understanding of the mobility marketplace (e.g., mobile devices, device management, carriers, or OEMs) and how solutions like Google Pixel are positioned and sold.
  • Experience selling into the Public Sector (Federal and/or State & Local), with working knowledge of the government buying cycle, procurement methods, and common contract vehicles.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce (SFDC) or another enterprise CRM platform for logging activities, managing leads, and tracking pipeline.
  • Proficiency with LinkedIn Sales Navigator for prospecting, list building, and outreach.
  • Strong technology aptitude and ability to quickly learn and communicate new product capabilities, particularly around mobile devices, security, and cloud-connected services.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including comfort delivering value-based messaging to technical, business, and procurement audiences.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to manage a high volume of activities while hitting and exceeding SDR KPIs.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience supporting or selling Google, Android, or other mobile OEM solutions into Public Sector agencies.
  • Prior experience working with federal agencies and State & Local governments, including familiarity with acronyms, budget cycles, and acquisition planning.
  • Experience collaborating with marketing to translate campaign themes into prospecting sequences and custom outreach.
  • Background working with channel partners, resellers, or system integrators that support government customers such as Carahsoft

Success Measures
  • Qualified meetings and opportunities created per month and quarter.
  • Conversion rates from MQL to Sales Accepted Lead (SAL) and to qualified opportunity.
  • Pipeline sourced and influenced for the Google Pixel Public Sector sales organization.
  • Quality of CRM data and completeness of notes and next steps for each opportunity.

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the most successful technology organizations and help expand the Google Pixel Public Sector footprint at a pivotal time for mobility in government. You will work closely with an experienced Public Sector sales team, gain deep exposure to the government technology landscape, and build a strong foundation for a long-term career in technology sales.
NOTE: the government landscape is very different from the typical commercial audience and knowledge of the public sector is requirement.
