What is a sales and application engineer?

Sales and Application Engineers are professionals who combine technical expertise with sales skills to provide solutions for clients. They work closely with customers to understand their technical needs and recommend appropriate products or services. These engineers often assist in the implementation and integration of solutions, ensuring customer satisfaction. Their role bridges the gap between engineering and sales, making them vital for companies that offer complex, technical products.

What does a sales and application engineer do?

Sales and Application Engineers often split their time between providing technical expertise—such as product demonstrations, application support, and custom solution development—and engaging with clients to identify needs and close sales. This dual role requires clear communication, time management, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into business value for clients. It’s common to collaborate closely with both engineering teams and the sales department, ensuring client requirements are addressed while also achieving sales targets. Successfully balancing these responsibilities is key to building long-term customer relationships and advancing within the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales and application engineer?

To thrive as a Sales and Application Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, technical sales, and product application knowledge, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CRM software, CAD tools, and industry-specific product platforms is commonly required, along with certifications in sales or technical fields. Outstanding interpersonal, presentation, and problem-solving skills help you build client relationships and tailor solutions to customer needs. These skills are crucial for effectively bridging technical expertise and client engagement, driving both customer satisfaction and business growth.

Regional Business Development Manager
Hydraulics & Motion Control Kansas City, KS
  • We're looking for a highly technical, highly driven sales professional to lead strategic business development efforts in the Kansas City market.
  • This is not an account management role.
  • We've identified more than $10 million of directly addressable market opportunity across key target accounts. The opportunity exists. The products exist. The support exists.
  • What we need is someone who can walk into an engineering office, establish credibility, uncover opportunities, win prototype business, and drive long-term production revenue.
  • If you're energized by creating opportunities, solving technical challenges, and relentlessly pursuing new business, this could be the career-defining role you've been looking for.

What You'll Do
  • Develop and execute strategic account plans for targeted industrial and OEM customers throughout the Kansas City region
  • Establish relationships with engineering, operations, purchasing, and executive stakeholders
  • Identify new applications and opportunities for hydraulic, motion control, and automation solutions
  • Engage directly with customer engineering teams to provide technical expertise and application support
  • Lead prototype opportunities from concept through qualification and production adoption
  • Coordinate resources across engineering, operations, and supplier partners to support customer success
  • Create and maintain a robust pipeline of new business opportunities
  • Drive market-share growth through disciplined prospecting and business development activities

Compensation
We understand that successful hunters often need time to develop opportunities and convert them into production revenue.
That's why we offer:
  • Guaranteed annual income of $150,000 to $175,000 during your first two years
  • Additional incentive compensation tied to successful prototype wins and strategic account development
  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • Vehicle allowance and business expense reimbursement
  • Ongoing product and application training

Why Join Us?
You'll have the rare opportunity to combine:
  • A clearly identified market opportunity
  • Industry-leading technologies and supplier relationships
  • Significant earning potential
  • Freedom and autonomy to build your territory
  • Direct impact on company growth

We aren't looking for someone to maintain business.
We're looking for someone who can create it.
If you're a technically capable salesperson who enjoys opening doors, solving engineering challenges, and winning business that competitors can't, we'd like to talk to you.
