How much do salaried drayage jobs pay per week?

As of Aug 21, 2026, the average weekly pay for salaried drayage in the United States is $1,444.35, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $1,250.00 and $1,625.00 per week, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a salaried drayage?

Salaried drayage jobs involve transporting freight over short distances, typically between ports, warehouses, and rail terminals, and are compensated with a regular salary instead of pay per load or mile. Employees in these positions are usually responsible for moving shipping containers or goods within a local region, ensuring timely and efficient delivery. Unlike independent contractors or owner-operators, salaried drayage drivers often receive benefits and have more predictable income and work schedules. This makes salaried drayage positions attractive to those seeking job stability in the logistics and transportation industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a salaried drayage driver?

To thrive as a Salaried Drayage Driver, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), thorough knowledge of freight transportation regulations, and experience with short-haul trucking or container transport. Familiarity with transportation management systems (TMS), electronic logging devices (ELDs), and GPS navigation tools is typically required. Strong time management, effective communication, and adaptability help drivers handle tight schedules and coordinate with port and warehouse personnel. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring timely, compliant, and efficient movement of cargo between ports and distribution centers.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in salaried drayage roles, and how can they be managed effectively?

Professionals in salaried drayage positions often encounter challenges such as tight delivery schedules, port congestion, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders like warehouse staff and shipping lines. Managing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, proactive communication, and adaptability to rapidly changing conditions. Many successful drayage professionals rely on real-time tracking systems and collaborative planning with dispatchers and logistics teams to minimize delays and ensure timely container movements.

What is the difference between Salaried Drayage vs Hourly Drayage?

AspectSalaried DrayageHourly Drayage
CompensationFixed annual salary regardless of hours workedPaid based on hours worked, often with overtime
Work EnvironmentTypically office-based with scheduled routesField-based, on-site at ports or terminals
CredentialsRelevant CDL and experienceSame as salaried, often requiring CDL

Both Salaried Drayage and Hourly Drayage roles require similar credentials and work in port or terminal environments. The main difference lies in compensation structure and work hours, with salaried positions offering fixed pay and predictable schedules, while hourly roles depend on hours worked, potentially including overtime.
