Job description

Position Summary

The Drayage Manager is responsible for leading the day-to-day drayage operations to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective movement of containers and freight. This role oversees driver performance, dispatch coordination, equipment utilization, customer service, and operational compliance while partnering with maintenance, safety, finance, and terminal operations to maximize productivity and service levels. The position is written to support both internal promotion and external recruitment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily drayage operations, including dispatch, routing, scheduling, and container movement to meet customer and operational requirements.
  • Manage driver performance, productivity, attendance, and compliance with company policies and DOT regulations.
  • Monitor equipment availability and utilization by partnering with maintenance to minimize downtime and maximize fleet productivity.
  • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) including on-time performance, driver productivity, idle time, fuel usage, detention, and chassis/container utilization.
  • Develop and implement operational improvements that increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve customer satisfaction.
  • Coordinate with port terminals, rail providers, customers, and internal departments to ensure timely freight movement and issue resolution.
  • Ensure compliance with DOT regulations, FMCSA requirements, company safety policies, and customer operating procedures.
  • Analyze operational data to identify trends, resolve recurring issues, and implement corrective actions.
  • Partner with Safety, HR, and Maintenance on driver coaching, accident investigations, training, and performance management.
  • Maintain strong customer relationships by proactively addressing service concerns and ensuring operational excellence.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Transportation, Logistics, Supply Chain, Business, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 3โ€“5 years of experience managing drayage, trucking, dispatch, or transportation operations.
  • Strong understanding of port operations, container drayage, chassis management, DOT regulations, and FMCSA compliance.
  • Experience managing drivers, dispatch teams, and transportation equipment in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to analyze operational metrics and implement process improvements that enhance productivity and profitability.
  • Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency with transportation management systems (TMS), dispatch software, Microsoft Office, and fleet management tools.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment while managing multiple priorities and meeting customer expectations.
