What is a drayage manager?

A Drayage Manager oversees the transportation of goods over short distances, typically between ports, rail yards, and warehouses. They coordinate the movement of shipping containers, manage logistics, and ensure timely delivery while complying with regulations and safety standards. Drayage Managers also supervise drivers, handle scheduling, and troubleshoot any issues that may arise during transit. Their role is crucial in streamlining supply chain operations and optimizing efficiency in the movement of freight.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a drayage manager?

To thrive as a Drayage Manager, you need expertise in logistics operations, knowledge of transportation regulations, and experience in supply chain management, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with transportation management systems (TMS), port terminal software, and industry certifications such as Certified Transportation Professional (CTP) is common. Strong leadership, negotiation, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies ensure efficient cargo movement, regulatory compliance, and effective team coordination in fast-paced port environments.
