Basic Functions and Scope of Responsibility

The Aquatic Safety Assistant supports a safe, clean, and welcoming environment by monitoring the pool deck, sauna, and surrounding areas. This role provides exceptional member service, enforces safety and facility policies, assists with daily operations, and responds appropriately to emergencies outside the swimming pool. The Assistant works closely with the aquatics team to ensure a positive and secure experience for all members and guests.


Role Responsibilities

  • Assist lifeguards and aquatic staff in maintaining safe, supervised pool environment, including deck, sauna, and surrounding areas
  • Monitor member behavior to prevent accidents;enforce safety protocols and YMCA rules at all times
  • Provide swim tests, fit life jackets, and enforce safety guidelines during all open swim and special event times
  • Conduct light cleaning duties on deck; secure equipment and toys after scheduled activities
  • Monitor sauna usage and enforce rules, especially during pool closures
  • Assist with poolside tasks such as chemical readings and bather counts as directed
  • Respond to emergencies according to YMCA protocols and within the scope of training
  • Communicate regularly with aquatic leadership regarding safety concerns, incidents, or member needs
  • Attend all required trainings and in-service sessions
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Education, Experience & Training

  • Minimum age of 15 years
  • CPR,AED and First Aid certification obtained within 30 days of employment
  • Ability to remain alert, focused, and physically prepared while on duty
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and guide diverse populations
  • Ability to uphold and clearly communicate YMCA rules, policies, and values
  • Willingness to work as part of a team in a fast-paced, member-focused environment

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Ability to spend extended periods of time in an indoor aquatic environment
