What is a robotics startup?

A Robotics Startup job involves working in an early-stage company focused on developing robotic technologies. Roles vary widely, including engineering, software development, product management, and business development. Employees often wear multiple hats, contributing to both technical and strategic aspects. The work environment is fast-paced, requiring innovation, adaptability, and problem-solving skills. It's an opportunity to build cutting-edge robotics solutions while growing with the company.

What are some of the key challenges faced when working at a robotics startup?

At a robotics startup, you’ll often face challenges such as navigating rapid prototyping cycles, balancing hardware and software integration issues, and adapting quickly to shifting project priorities. Teams are usually small and highly collaborative, so you may need to wear multiple hats and contribute outside your primary area of expertise. Additionally, limited resources and tight timelines can require creativity and resilience. Overcoming these challenges offers valuable experience, growth opportunities, and the chance to make a significant impact on the company’s success and product innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a robotics startup, and why are they important?

To thrive in a robotics startup, you need a strong background in engineering, computer science, or robotics, as well as practical experience in hardware and software integration. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as ROS (Robot Operating System), CAD software, embedded systems, and possibly certifications in machine learning or automation is often expected. Problem-solving, creativity, adaptability, and effective communication are critical soft skills in this fast-evolving field. These capabilities are vital because startups require innovative thinking, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the agility to rapidly develop and iterate products.

Job description

Robot Operator

Tutor Intelligence, an MIT robotics startup, has developed a novel no-code interface to instruct robots on new tasks. We are deploying this technology to factories and warehouses across America, and are growing our team to support 24-7 operations.

This is an operational role perfect for someone who is looking to get involved with technology and join a fast-moving startup. In this role, you will work to keep the robots in the field happy and healthy. Your responsibilities include:

  • Instructing robots via a web-based portal
  • Responding to customer support calls and resolving technical issues
  • Learning protocols for diagnosing and solving robot issues
  • Tracking robot performance and providing feedback to engineering
  • Reporting bugs and testing new features

This role is shift-based and requires regular weekend coverage.

Shift 1: 6:30am 3:30pm

Shift 2: 3pm 11pm

Shift 3: 11pm 7am (Overnight)

Shift 4: 11am 7pm (SatWeds)

We have weekend and holiday operations, which mean you will be scheduled for at least one weekend day and holidays (as needed).

This opportunity comes with benefits, including health insurance. We are fully in-person in Watertown MA, with parking onsite.

We are a startup looking for people who are eager and excited to do what they can, to ensure the team is making progress and our mission is successful. If this sounds like you (and you don't mind hanging with a bunch of robot nerds :), then we look forward to your application!
