Robotics Consulting involves advising clients on robotics solutions, project management, and system integration, often in a client-facing role. Robotics Engineers focus on designing, developing, and testing robotic systems. While both roles require technical knowledge, consulting emphasizes strategic planning and communication, whereas engineering emphasizes technical development and implementation.

What is robotics consulting?

Robotics consulting involves providing expert advice and solutions to organizations looking to implement, optimize, or troubleshoot robotic systems and automation processes. Robotics consultants assess client needs, recommend appropriate technologies, design custom robotic solutions, and assist with integration and training. Their work spans industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and more, helping businesses increase efficiency, safety, and innovation through robotics. Consultants also stay current with the latest advancements to ensure clients benefit from cutting-edge technologies. Ultimately, they bridge the gap between technical robotics expertise and real-world business challenges.

What are some common challenges faced by robotics consultants when integrating new automation solutions into existing client operations?

Robotics consultants often encounter challenges such as aligning new automation technologies with legacy systems, managing resistance to change among client staff, and ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations. They must also balance technical requirements with budgetary and timeline constraints, while effectively communicating complex concepts to stakeholders with varying technical backgrounds. Navigating these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a collaborative approach to ensure successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Consultant, you need a strong background in robotics engineering, systems integration, and problem-solving, typically supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or C++), robotics simulation tools (e.g., ROS, Gazebo), and relevant certifications like Certified Robotics Professional are highly valued. Exceptional communication, project management, and client-facing skills help you effectively translate technical solutions into actionable business strategies. These skills are crucial for delivering innovative, practical robotics solutions that drive client success and industry advancement.

Value Driven Solutions (VDS) is looking for a traveling Robotics Field Service Engineer to join our interim executive bench, with this role based in [Location] and supporting client deployments across North America. The Robotics Field Service Engineer will be the hands-on technical resource on the floor โ€” installing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and training โ€” and the bridge between OEM technical support and the client's maintenance team.

The ideal candidate will enjoy traveling and being hands-on at customer sites and have the ability to dig into a robotic cell, weigh mechanical, electrical, and controls factors, and deliver the best possible uptime outcome for the customer. The ideal candidate will apply their command of FANUC, ABB, Yaskawa, KUKA, or Universal Robots and communicate effectively with maintenance technicians, plant engineers, and OEM support.

Responsibilities:

  • Robotics deployment โ€“ Install, commission, and qualify industrial robots and robotic cells at client sites. Develop and modify robot programs (teach pendant, offline programming). Integrate end-of-arm tooling, vision systems, and conveyance.
  • Field troubleshooting โ€“ Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and controls issues on robotic systems. Travel to client sites in North America (and occasionally internationally) on short notice.
  • Training and documentation โ€“ Train client maintenance and operations teams on safe operation, troubleshooting, and PM. Document configurations, parameters, backups, and recovery procedures.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of hands-on robotics field service or integration experience
  • Programming and troubleshooting on FANUC, ABB, Yaskawa, KUKA, or Universal Robots
  • Strong electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical diagnostic skills
  • Comfort working independently at customer sites
  • Willingness to travel 50โ€“80%
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a technical field, or equivalent military / trade experience
