What does a robotic engineer intern do?

A Robotic Engineer Intern assists in designing, building, testing, and maintaining robotic systems or components under the guidance of experienced engineers. Their responsibilities often include programming robots, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and participating in research and development projects. Interns may also help with documentation and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to improve robotic performance and efficiency. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and exposure to the robotics industry.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as a robotic engineer intern?

As a Robotic Engineer Intern, you'll typically participate in hands-on projects such as assisting with the design, assembly, and testing of robotic systems. Interns often support the development of software algorithms for robot control, troubleshoot hardware issues, and help with data collection for performance analysis. You may collaborate closely with senior engineers, software developers, and sometimes cross-disciplinary teams to contribute to ongoing research or product development. This role provides valuable exposure to real-world engineering challenges and an opportunity to learn industry-standard tools and methodologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotic engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotic Engineer Intern, you typically need a foundation in robotics, mechanical or electrical engineering, programming (such as C++ or Python), and relevant coursework or academic projects. Familiarity with CAD software, robotic simulation tools (like ROS), and microcontroller platforms is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help interns adapt and collaborate in multidisciplinary environments. These skills and qualities are vital for contributing meaningfully to projects and quickly learning in a fast-evolving field.

How to become a robotic engineer intern with no experience?

To become a robotic engineer intern with no experience, focus on building foundational skills in robotics, programming, and electronics through online courses or tutorials. Gaining hands-on experience with robotics kits, programming languages like Python or C++, and understanding basic mechanical and electrical concepts can improve your chances; internships often value enthusiasm and willingness to learn alongside technical knowledge.

Is there a demand for robotic engineer interns?

Robotic engineer internships are in demand due to the growing use of automation and robotics across industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics. Interns with skills in programming, CAD, and robotics systems are sought after to support ongoing technological advancements and innovation efforts.

Job description

Hadrian - Manufacturing the Future

Hadrian is building autonomous factories to reindustrialize America. By combining AI, advanced software, robotics, and full-stack manufacturing, we help aerospace and defense companies build rockets, satellites, aircraft, ships, and other mission-critical systems up to 10x faster and at significantly lower cost.

Following our $1.37B Series D at a $7.87B valuation, Hadrian is rapidly expanding our manufacturing footprint, launching new capabilities across welding, casting, forging, electronics, additive manufacturing, and more, while scaling our Factory-as-a-Service platform to transform how critical products are built.

Backed by leading investors including JPMorgan Chase, Valor Equity Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, Founders Fund, 137 Ventures, Lux Capital, T. Rowe Price, and Morgan Stanley, we’re building the future of American manufacturing—and looking for exceptional people to help make it happen.

If you’re ready to take on the most challenging and rewarding work of your career while helping create American manufacturing jobs for generations to come, you’re exactly who we’re looking for.

The Role

Hadrian's Robotics team builds hardware and software that powers next-generation manufacturing. We're looking for a Robotics Software Engineer Intern to help design, develop, and deploy the software behind our intelligent automation systems. You'll work alongside experienced engineers on real production systems that operators, technicians, and factories depend on every day. We move quickly, ship continuously, and turn real factory needs into production-ready products.

What You'll Do

  • Build and improve internal tools, dashboards, and automation systems that support factory operations

  • Contribute to backend services, APIs, and data pipelines used across engineering, operations, and quality teams

  • Help design and implement features that improve visibility into production workflows, capacity, and program status

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including operations, program management, and quality to understand requirements and deliver software solutions

  • Write clean, well-tested code and participate in code reviews

  • Surface technical risks and contribute to architectural discussions

What We're Looking For

  • Current university student pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and June 2028

  • Strong proficiency in C++ or Python

  • Exposure to motion control, trajectory generation, and robot kinematics/dynamics

  • Experience working with cross-disciplinary teams and end-to-end project ownership

  • Excellent communication and documentation abilities

  • Passionate about advancing manufacturing automation through robotics innovation

  • Excitement for manufacturing, aerospace, defense, or industrial systems

  • Comfortable working in a fast-moving, highly ambiguous environment

  • Willingness to work on-site in Los Angeles, CA

What Will Set You Apart

  • Prior internship or project experience shipping production software

  • Interest in manufacturing systems, automation, or industrial software

What You'll Gain

  • Hands-on experience building software for a high-growth, mission-driven industrial company

  • Direct involvement in real production systems, not just internal tools or side projects

  • A front-row seat to how Hadrian is transforming aerospace and defense manufacturing through software, automation, and data

Compensation

For this role, the target hourly range is $46.15 - $50.71

This reflects the lowest to highest hourly rate we reasonably and in good faith believe we would pay for this intern position at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range is subject to change. An intern's hourly rate within this range will be based on several factors, including, but not limited to relevant education, prior experience, skills, geographic location, and the nature of the internship assignment.

Intern Benefits

Housing support may be available based on business need.

Benefits for Full-time Employees
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans for employees

  • 401k

  • Relocation support may be provided for certain situations, based on business need.

  • Flexible vacation policy

  • Equity
