What is a robot?

Robots are programmable machines that can carry out a series of actions automatically or be controlled by humans. They are commonly used in manufacturing, healthcare, space exploration, and many other industries. Robots often have sensors, actuators, and software that allow them to interact with their surroundings and perform specific tasks. Their capabilities range from simple repetitive actions to complex problem-solving and autonomous decision-making.

What does a Robotics Engineer do?

As a Robotics Engineer, your daily tasks often include designing, building, and testing robotic systems, as well as troubleshooting and refining prototypes. You’ll collaborate closely with other engineers, software developers, and project managers to integrate hardware and software components. Regular responsibilities also involve documenting technical processes, performing system simulations, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. This role requires adaptability and strong problem-solving skills, as projects may evolve rapidly based on testing outcomes and technological advancements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or C++), CAD software, and robotics platforms like ROS is typically required. Problem-solving ability, creativity, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure the design and implementation of innovative, reliable robotic systems to meet evolving industry needs.

What is the difference between Robot vs Automation Technician?

AspectRobotAutomation Technician
CredentialsTypically requires robotics or engineering certificationsRequires technical certifications in automation or electronics
Work EnvironmentWorks with robotic systems in manufacturing or industrial settingsMaintains and repairs automated systems and machinery
Industry UsageCommonly used in robotics, manufacturing, and industrial sectorsFound in manufacturing, production, and automation industries
Search IntentPeople compare roles involving robotic systems and automationIndividuals look for careers in automation maintenance and repair

Robots are automated machines used in various industries, often requiring specialized robotics knowledge. Automation Technicians focus on maintaining and repairing automated systems, including robots. While both roles involve automation, robots are the physical machines, whereas Automation Technicians work on the systems that operate them.

How can I get a job in robotics?

To get a job as a robot or in robotics, candidates typically need a background in engineering, computer science, or related fields, along with skills in programming, mechanical design, and control systems. Job description

Tutor Intelligence, an MIT robotics startup, has developed a novel no-code interface to instruct robots on new tasks. We are deploying this technology to factories and warehouses across America, and are growing our team to support 24-7 operations.
This is an operational role - perfect for someone who is looking to get involved with technology and join a fast-moving startup. In this role, you will work to keep the robots in the field happy and healthy. Your responsibilities include:
* Instructing robots via a web-based portal
* Responding to customer support calls and resolving technical issues
* Learning protocols for diagnosing and solving robot issues
* Tracking robot performance and providing feedback to engineering
* Reporting bugs and testing new features
This role is shift-based and requires regular weekend coverage.
Shift 1: 6:30am - 3:30pm
Shift 2: 3pm - 11pm
Shift 3: 11pm - 7am (Overnight)
Shift 4: 11am - 7pm (Sat-Weds)
We have weekend and holiday operations, which mean you will be scheduled for at least one weekend day and holidays (as needed).
This opportunity comes with benefits, including health insurance. We are fully in-person in Watertown MA, with parking onsite.
We are a startup looking for people who are eager and excited to do what they can, to ensure the team is making progress and our mission is successful. If this sounds like you (and you don't mind hanging with a bunch of robot nerds :), then we look forward to your application!
$20 - $23 an hour
