What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the restaurant expo position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Restaurant Expo, you need a solid understanding of kitchen operations, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask under pressure. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems and kitchen display screens is often required, though formal certifications are not typically needed. Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills help you excel when coordinating between the kitchen and front-of-house staff. These attributes are critical for ensuring timely, accurate food delivery and maintaining a smooth workflow during busy service periods.

What is a restaurant expo?

A Restaurant Expo, short for Expeditor, is responsible for ensuring food orders are prepared correctly, plated properly, and delivered to customers in a timely manner. They act as a crucial link between the kitchen and front-of-house staff, coordinating communication to keep service running smoothly. Expos check order accuracy, manage ticket flow, and ensure food presentation meets restaurant standards. This role requires strong multitasking, communication, and attention to detail to maintain efficiency during busy service periods.

What does a typical shift look like for a restaurant expo and how do they interact with other team members?

A typical shift for a Restaurant Expo involves working in the kitchen or at the expo line to manage the flow of dishes from the kitchen to the dining area, making sure every order is complete, accurate, and meets quality standards. Expos act as the main communication link between cooks and servers, often clarifying orders, resolving issues quickly, and prioritizing tickets during busy periods. You’ll collaborate closely with chefs, line cooks, and waitstaff, often juggling multiple tasks and keeping a clear head during rush hours. This role is fast-paced and can be demanding, but it’s also rewarding for those who enjoy teamwork and being central to the guest experience. Over time, experience as an expo can lead to other positions in restaurant management or kitchen leadership.

Position Overview

Iacofano’s Catering & Events is hiring a Catering Expo / QA Coordinator to oversee food quality, order accuracy, and delivery readiness in our fast-paced production kitchen.

This is one of the most important roles in the operation—you are the final checkpoint before every order leaves the building.

You will ensure every order is accurate, complete, properly packaged, and on time, while coordinating closely with both the kitchen and delivery drivers to keep everything running smoothly.

This role combines quality control, logistics, and kitchen coordination—not a typical restaurant expo position.

Available Shifts

We operate a 24/7 production kitchen, and this role supports all shifts depending on business needs.

Current openings include:

  • Day Shift: Example 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM or 5:00 AM - 1:00 PM (corporate catering & same-day production)
  • Afternoon Shift: Example 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM or 1:00 PM - 9:00 PM (next-day prep, inflight builds, kitchen flow)
  • Overnight Shift + SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL $: Example 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM or 9:00 PM - 5:00 AM (crew meals, early departures, final builds)
  • Full-time and part-time positions available
  • Weekend availability may be required

Shifts are assigned based on business needs, with opportunities to grow into preferred or leadership shifts over time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review all orders for accuracy, quality, and completeness
  • Verify food presentation, packaging, and portioning standards
  • Coordinate timing between kitchen production and delivery schedules
  • Stage and organize orders for efficient driver pickup
  • Communicate with drivers on routes, timing, and order details
  • Identify and resolve issues before orders leave the kitchen
  • Maintain a clean, organized expo/QA station
  • Assist with order printing, layout, and final checks
  • Support overall kitchen flow during peak production times
What Makes a Great Fit
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Strong sense of urgency and accountability
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple orders at once
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
  • Problem-solver who catches mistakes before they happen
  • Team player who supports both kitchen and drivers
Requirements:

Requirements

  • Previous kitchen, catering, or food service experience preferred
  • Experience in expo, QA, or kitchen coordination is a plus
  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure
Why This Job Is Different
  • Not a typical restaurant expo role
  • Focus on quality control and logistics—not just plating
  • Structured systems and clear expectations
  • Direct impact on customer satisfaction and delivery success
  • Opportunity to grow into leadership roles
Bottom Line

If you’re looking for a standard kitchen job, this isn’t it.
If you want to be part of the engine that ensures every order is right, on time, and executed at a high level, this is a critical role with real growth potential.
