How much do respiratory per diem jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for respiratory per diem in the United States is $43.23, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $30.29 and $53.61 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some unique challenges respiratory therapists may face when working per diem compared to full-time positions?

Respiratory therapists working per diem often encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to different hospital environments, patient populations, and protocols since they may work at multiple facilities. Building rapport with permanent staff and staying current on each location’s policies can also be more demanding. However, per diem roles offer flexibility in scheduling and exposure to diverse clinical experiences, which can enhance skills and career growth.

What is the difference between Respiratory Per Diem vs Respiratory Therapist?

AspectRespiratory Per DiemRespiratory Therapist
CredentialsVaries, often requires RRT or CRT certificationRequires RRT or CRT certification and state licensure
Work EnvironmentOn-call, short-term assignments, hospital or clinic settingsFull-time or part-time hospital, clinic, or home care settings
Employer & IndustryStaffing agencies, hospitals, healthcare facilitiesHospitals, clinics, healthcare organizations

Respiratory Per Diem roles typically involve short-term, on-call assignments through staffing agencies, offering flexibility but less stability. Respiratory Therapists work full-time or part-time in healthcare facilities, providing ongoing patient care with required certifications. Both roles require similar credentials but differ mainly in employment structure and work setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a respiratory per diem?

To excel as a Respiratory Per Diem, you need a solid background in respiratory therapy, a current state license, and typically certification as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT). Familiarity with ventilators, arterial blood gas analyzers, and electronic health records is essential for delivering effective respiratory care. Strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and the ability to work independently in various clinical environments help you stand out in this flexible role. These competencies ensure high-quality, responsive care across diverse patient needs and healthcare settings.

What is a respiratory per diem?

A Respiratory Per Diem is a respiratory therapist who works on an as-needed basis rather than a set, full-time schedule. These professionals provide care to patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders, filling in for staff shortages, covering busy periods, or working in multiple healthcare settings. Their flexible role allows hospitals and clinics to maintain adequate respiratory care coverage without committing to a full-time hire. Per diem respiratory therapists often have similar qualifications and responsibilities as their full-time counterparts, but they may enjoy more control over their work schedules.
