Job description

Note to Applicants: this job is located in Juneau, Alaska. It is not a remote position and the employer does not promise relocation assistance. Preference will be given to Alaska residents and all GHS employees must obtain an Alaska driver's license or ID card within 30 days of hire.

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of a Shift Supervisor (SS), Reentry Services Manager, and the Reentry Services Director, the Relief Resident Advisor (RRA) covers shifts for permanent employees at Gastineau Human Services.

Resident Advisors (RAโ€™s) assist in all aspects of the daily operation of Glacier Manor Community Residential Center (CRC). The RA's primary function is to provide campus security, encourage resident accountability, and support all campus residents to understand and comply with program rules and societal expectations to successfully integrate back into society. RAs also assist other GHS departments with any security needs.

Resident Advisors are scheduled to work 7 days on, 7 days off. Shifts are 12 hours long, alternate between day and night schedules, and may include holidays and weekends.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS: 1. Cover shifts for permanent employees.

A. Reports for shifts on time, professionally dressed in appropriate footwear, and ready to provide all required duties throughout the shift.

B. Responds to phone calls/texts to cover shifts in a timely manner and communicates availability in advance whenever possible.

  1. Enforce CRC rules and GHS program policies fairly and professionally.
    1. Maintains a thorough knowledge of GHS and Glacier Manor CRC policies and procedures and keeps current with any changes or updates to them.
    2. Admits and discharges residents following Glacier Manor CRC regulations and completes all required documentation.
    3. Conducts and logs both individual body searches (pat downs), and facility unit searches (shakedowns) on a regular basis following current GHS policies and procedures.
    4. Recognizes resident violations of rules and policies and follows through, when needed, with clear, concise written documentation (informational form or incident report) describing what staff observed, instructions given to residents, resident responses and statements, and additional follow-up information and support provided as applicable.
    5. Receives and receipts all funds coming into the facility following current GHS policies and procedures.
    6. Performs weekly room cleanliness checks in CRC resident units and completes form.
    7. Accurately files documents in resident records.
    8. Safely transport residents in company vehicles.
    9. Assigns on campus Community Work Service (CWS) tasks to residents.
    10. May be required to cover for the Shift Supervisor.
    11. Logs in visitors and ensures that no one on the disallowed visitors list enters the facility/grounds.
  1. Provides accountability for and tracking of residents while in the facility and out in the community.
    1. Performs and logs visual surveillances on authorized list.
    2. Conducts a resident count at the facility on an hourly basis and maintains the Resident Count Sheet which shows the number of residents in the facility and the number of residents signed out for approved community activities.
    3. Maintains and updates the daily resident sign-in and sign-out log.
    4. Reports out of place residents to the Shift Supervisor immediately and follows current CRC protocols for documenting and reporting out of place residents to ADOC.
    5. Administers and logs resident breath analysis tests (BAโ€™s).
    6. Administers and logs intake and random urinalysis tests according to set schedule and current GHS policies and procedures.
    7. Disperses and logs medication provided following current GHS policies and procedures as needed.
    8. Testifies in court as needed.
  1. Provide security for the GHS campus.
    1. Operates and monitors visual and audio surveillance equipment within the facility.
    2. Supports Juno House and Recovery House residents, completes assigned residential program duties, and attends weekly team meetings as requested.
    3. Provides residents with incidental supplies as requested.
    4. Provides first aid, CPR, AED and/or overdose response and direct supervision of residents, when required, for medical emergencies.
    5. Provides and logs daily telephonic surveillances using authorized call lists.
    6. Performs fire drills and ensures that all campus residents, staff, and visitors follow GHS evacuation procedures.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  1. Familiar with Microsoft Access/Excel/Outlook/Teams/Word to complete required database entries, statistical reports, automated forms, emails, and basic word processing.
  2. Ability to present a polite, professional demeanor toward residents, coworkers, campus visitors, and other agencies.
  3. Ability to ensure that current State and Federal Privacy Act rules and regulations are adhered to.
  4. Demonstrate the use of appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication in managing conflict resolution in high anxiety situations.
  5. Ability to apply appropriate behavioral reinforcement principles during interactions with all campus residents.
  6. Knowledge and respect for cultural issues and experiences unique to Alaska.
  7. Familiarity with local community resources including medical and social services agencies.


DESIRED EXPERIENCE OR KNOWLEDGE:

  1. Familiarity with substance abuse and mental health issues and treatment approaches.
  2. Coursework in sociology, psychology, or communication.
  3. Working knowledge of the Alaska Department of Corrections.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Must be 19 years of age or older.
  2. Must have a current, valid Alaska driverโ€™s license and be insurable by GHSโ€™ auto insurance provider.
  3. Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  4. Must pass the Department of Corrections and Department of Health background checks and pre-employment urinalysis.
  5. Must obtain and maintain current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
