What does a research development process engineer do?

A Research Development Process Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing processes in research and product development settings. They work to improve efficiency, quality, and scalability of new products or technologies by bridging the gap between research and manufacturing. Their role often involves collaborating with scientists, engineers, and production teams to ensure that innovative concepts can be effectively and safely produced at a larger scale. They also analyze data, troubleshoot problems, and implement improvements to meet regulatory and business requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research development process engineer?

A Research Development Process Engineer requires a solid background in chemical or process engineering, problem-solving abilities, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or MATLAB), statistical analysis tools, and industry-specific certifications like Six Sigma are often expected. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure successful innovation, efficient process optimization, and seamless collaboration in research-driven engineering environments.

What are the main challenges research development process engineers face when transitioning projects from R&D to full-scale production?

One of the primary challenges Research Development Process Engineers encounter is ensuring that innovative processes developed in the laboratory can be effectively scaled up for manufacturing without compromising quality or efficiency. This often involves troubleshooting unforeseen issues, optimizing process parameters, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and supply chain. Navigating regulatory requirements and managing tight project deadlines are also common hurdles. Successful engineers leverage strong problem-solving skills and clear communication to bridge the gap between research concepts and practical, large-scale implementation.

What is the difference between Research Development Process Engineer vs Research Scientist?

AspectResearch Development Process EngineerResearch Scientist
Primary FocusDeveloping and optimizing manufacturing processes and workflowsConducting scientific research to generate new knowledge or products
Work EnvironmentIndustrial labs, manufacturing facilitiesAcademic or industrial research labs
Required CredentialsBachelor’s or Master’s in Engineering, Chemistry, or related fields; certifications in process improvementMaster’s or PhD in Science or Engineering
Industry UsageManufacturing, chemical, pharmaceutical industriesAcademic, R&D departments, biotech, pharmaceuticals

Research Development Process Engineers focus on translating research into scalable manufacturing processes, while Research Scientists primarily conduct experiments to advance scientific knowledge. Both roles require strong technical skills but differ in application and environment.

Job description

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Hardware Platform Organization is Anduril's central hardware engineering org. We build the shared technologies, tools, and infrastructure that power hardware development across every Anduril division, from actuators and propulsion to batteries, avionics, rocket motors, and test operations. Our teams set engineering standards, run development manufacturing and test sites, and develop core technology products that ship across multiple product lines.

ABOUT THE JOB

We are looking for a Product Development Process Engineer to join our team. This role sits within the Product Development Process (PDP) team and is responsible for defining, building, and rolling out the processes and tools that hardware engineering teams use to design, develop, and qualify products. You will partner directly with engineering and program leadership to establish scalable workflows, own the standards repository, and drive adoption across a fast-growing hardware portfolio.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Define and maintain the architecture for hardware product development processes, including design review gates, qualification campaign definitions, and production readiness criteria.
  • Own and evolve the central engineering standards repository, covering design standards, analysis standards, and the product maturity framework.
  • Partner with the tools development team to build and iterate on the PDP toolset, creating an accessible interface for a large, cross-functional user base.
  • Collaborate with engineering, program, and cross-functional leadership to align on best practices for design, test, and entry/exit criteria across development milestones.
  • Draft process workflows, user guides, and standard operating procedures that translate complex requirements into clear, usable resources for engineering teams.
  • Gather requirements across impacted teams, consolidate them into actionable process documentation, and manage releases through the PDP tool.
  • Lead rollout of new processes across departments, including coordinating training workshops, release kickoffs, and stakeholder alignment.
  • Build and maintain feedback loops to monitor adoption, collect input from engineering teams, and drive continuous improvement of development processes.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of Industry Experience as a Design Engineer, Development Engineer, Process Development Engineer, Product Manager, or similar role.
  • Hands-on mechanical or electrical design/development experience with a track record of bringing hardware products to market.
  • Experience working on advanced hardware systems with cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Knowledge of design and development toolchains (CAD, PLM, etc.).
  • Familiarity with defense industry standards and compliance frameworks.
  • Must be a U.S. Person.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • M.S. Degree in technical engineering field.
  • Able to obtain and hold a U.S. Secret Clearance
  • Experience designing or architecting custom engineering tools or workflows.
  • Experience developing training materials, user guides, or documentation for technical audiences.
  • Project management experience or PMP certification.
