Job description

The Research Associate will join an active health care delivery research program (led by Dr. Maggie Paul Bio) embedded within Mayo Clinic, one of the largest and most integrated academic health systems in the country. This is a transitional training role designed for early-career researchers pursuing independent academic careers in health services research, implementation science, or health policy.
What makes this position distinctive is the combination of rigorous research training with direct access to health system infrastructure. The Research Associate will partner with clinicians and operational leaders across Mayo Clinic to design and conduct evaluations of real-world innovations in care delivery and clinical practice, including digital health tools, new care delivery models, and physician workforce and leadership initiatives. The role sits within a team with a large portfolio of active projects and offers both structured mentorship and the autonomy to develop an independent line of scholarship.
Candidates with experience conducting research within learning health systems or health care delivery organizations are particularly encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead mixed-methods evaluations of health system innovations, with the flexibility to design studies that leverage the candidate's methodological strengths, whether qualitative (e.g., interviews, focus groups), quantitative (e.g., survey design, EHR-based analyses), or integrated approaches.
  • Partner with clinicians, operational leaders, and interdisciplinary teams to develop research questions and evaluation designs that inform care delivery decisions.
  • Develop and submit manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national conferences.
  • Contribute to new research proposals and grant submissions, including opportunities to develop the candidate's own funded research agenda.
  • Pursue independent scholarly interests aligned with the broader research program, building toward an independent research career.

Training and Mentorship
The Research Associate will receive structured mentorship from the principal investigator and will be part of a collaborative research team that includes clinical and operational partners across Mayo Clinic. Professional development activities include:
  • Weekly one-on-one mentorship focused on career development and research progress
  • Manuscript development and grant writing support
  • Opportunities to lead evaluation studies from design through dissemination
  • Exposure to health system leadership and the operational context of care delivery research

Qualifications
Required
  • Ph.D. in health services research, public health, epidemiology, health policy, sociology, or a related field
  • At least three years of relevant post-doctoral experience is required for this position

Preferred
  • Experience conducting mixed-methods or multi-method research
  • Experience evaluating health care programs, clinical innovations, or delivery system interventions
  • Strong expertise in qualitative or quantitative methods, with interest in developing complementary methodological skills
  • Experience working within health care delivery settings or learning health systems
  • Record of first-authored peer-reviewed publications
