What is a Remote Utility job?

A Remote Utility job typically involves monitoring, managing, or supporting utility services such as electricity, water, or telecommunications from a remote location. Responsibilities may include data analysis, troubleshooting system issues, coordinating with field teams, and ensuring service reliability. This role often requires technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and familiarity with remote monitoring tools. It allows professionals to contribute to utility operations without being physically on-site, improving efficiency and response times.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Utility position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Utility worker, a solid background in utility services (such as electric, water, or gas), troubleshooting skills, and relevant trade certifications or technical training are essential. Familiarity with remote monitoring tools, data management systems, and geographic information systems (GIS) is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work independently make candidates stand out in this position. These competencies are vital for effectively maintaining and supporting utility operations from a distance, ensuring rapid response to service issues and consistent system reliability.

What are the typical challenges faced by Remote Utility workers, and how are they managed?

Remote Utility positions often require handling technical issues and system monitoring without being physically present on-site, which can pose communication and troubleshooting challenges. Workers frequently interact through digital platforms and must depend on accurate remote diagnostics and clear reporting to field crews. To manage these challenges, effective use of remote monitoring technology and close collaboration with on-site teams are crucial. Many organizations provide ongoing training and robust communication tools to help employees succeed in the remote environment.

ENTRUST Solutions Group is seeking a Design Engineer to support electric distribution system design projects that power communities. This hybrid role includes a mix of remote work, office collaboration, and field responsibilities.
This position offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated engineer eager to gain hands-on project experience, collaborate with industry experts, and grow within a company that prioritizes professional development. You'll work on meaningful utility projects, develop technical skills, and contribute to designs that support safe, reliable electrical service for residential and commercial customers.
What You'll Do:
  • Work on electric distribution system designs for subdivisions, apartment complexes, mixed-use developments, and other utility projects.
  • Apply technical knowledge to engineering designs, ensuring adherence to project specifications, scope, cost, schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with Designers and Drafters to complete design packages.
  • Support the preparation of simple designs or portions of larger projects, including calculations, drawings, and analysis.
  • Gain hands-on experience with CAD programs and engineering analysis tools (e.g., DDS, PoleForeman, O-Calc).
  • Lead design development for smaller or less complex projects and support senior engineers on technically advanced projects.
  • Apply industry codes and standards, including RUS, NESC, and utility-specific guidelines.
  • Conduct field inspections (up to 25-30%) to gather design data and support construction coordination.
  • Communicate challenges related to scope, cost, schedule, or quality clearly and professionally.
  • Identify information that should be communicated to clients and stakeholders through team leads and project managers.
  • Self-check design work prior to reviews; participate in peer and QC reviews.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned, including fielding work or project documentation.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred) from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Able to walk down job sites and attend in person meetings.
  • Must have valid Driver's License and personal vehicle and willingness to travel as needed for fielding requirements, anticipated to be 30% of time (mileage reimbursement applies)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Hands-on experience with CAD or MicroStation.
  • Experience related to electric distribution infrastructure.
  • Experience with AEGIS software.
  • Proficiency in Maximo asset management systems.
  • Familiarity with utility design standards, permitting, and construction support processes.
  • Background in utility design or distribution engineering.

What We Offer:
  • A supportive and inclusive work environment that values diversity and encourages innovation.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and career development.
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, including generous paid time off, retirement program with a company match, tuition reimbursement, and flexible work schedules.
