Job description

Underwriter

Hybrid or Remote   •    Full-Time

Ready to underwrite at a program built by operators?

HabGen Insurance is a specialty program built exclusively for student housing and multifamily communities — created by industry professionals who operated these properties before they underwrote them. We're growing quickly, and we're looking for an experienced Underwriter who's ready to own accounts, partner directly with brokers, and help shape a modern habitational program from the inside.

This role is offered as fully remote, or hybrid if you're located near our Chapel Hill, NC office.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As a HabGen Underwriter, you'll be responsible for the day-to-day underwriting and growth of an assigned book within our specialty habitational program. You'll work directly with brokers, evaluate new and renewal business, and partner with senior underwriters and program leadership on appetite, pricing, and portfolio decisions.

We move fast — indications within hours, bindable quotes within a business day on clean submissions — because brokers and their clients deserve straight answers from real experts. You'll be one of those experts.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Underwriting & Risk Selection

  • Review new and renewal submissions for student housing and multifamily Property and General Liability risks.
  • Evaluate financial strength, loss experience, sponsor quality, and territorial exposure to determine risk acceptability.
  • Price accounts in line with HabGen's appetite, pricing discipline, and target rates.
  • Issue indications and bindable quotes on tight turnarounds.
  • Negotiate terms, conditions, and pricing with brokers.

Broker Partnership & Market Development

  • Build and maintain strong producer and broker relationships
  • Educate brokers on HabGen's appetite, submission requirements, and value proposition.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities within the habitational segment.

Portfolio Management

  • Manage assigned accounts through the policy lifecycle — new business, renewals, endorsements, and mid-term changes.
  • Collaborate with claims, loss control, and operations to drive favorable underwriting outcomes.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and contribute to underwriting discipline and profitable growth.

Program Building

  • Bring market intelligence and account-level insight back to leadership.
  • Provide input on appetite, pricing, and product evolution as the program scales.
  • Mentor newer team members and contribute to a strong underwriting culture.

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • 3+ years of commercial P&C underwriting experience required; 5+ years preferred.
  • Habitational experience a plus. Direct exposure to student housing, multifamily, or other habitational property risks is highly valued.
  • Technical underwriting skills. Strong foundation in property and/or general liability underwriting, including risk assessment, financial analysis, and pricing.
  • Broker-facing presence. Excellent written and verbal communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Decisive and self-motivated. You can make underwriting decisions independently, manage your time, and operate well in a fast-moving environment.
  • Operator mindset. You ask hard questions, look for the better way, and care about how the work gets done — not just the answer.

Nice to Have

  • A college degree
  • Active P&C license
  • Industry designations (CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace and Slack.

WHAT WE OFFER

We invest in our people with a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your health, your future, and your life outside of work:

  • Competitive compensation with annual bonus potential, commensurate with experience.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, with employer contributions to a Health Savings Account.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Employer-paid life and AD&D insurance, with options for supplemental life and short- and long-term disability coverage.
  • Wellness and lifestyle benefits, including telehealth, an Employee Assistance Program, pet insurance, and an exclusive discount platform.
  • Paid time off and a culture that respects your time outside of work.
  • Flexible work arrangements — fully remote, or hybrid if you're located near our Chapel Hill, NC office.
  • Direct access to senior leadership — no committees, no bureaucracy, and a real seat at the table as the program grows.

WHY HABGEN?

HabGen Insurance is the first and only insurance solution purpose-built for student housing and multifamily communities. We're growing quickly inside Berylline Insurance Group (BIG), and we're investing in the underwriters who will help us scale.

What that means for you: a focused specialty program where your underwriting decisions matter, with direct access to decision-makers and the resources of an established insurance group behind you. You'll work on a single asset class with deep expertise, partner with brokers who value speed and straight answers, and have real influence on how the program evolves.

If you're an experienced underwriter who wants to focus, move quickly, and build something, there's a real seat for you here.
