In this hybrid role based in Raleigh, NC, you'll reportto the VP of Underwritingand serve as a key member of the Underwriting Leadership Team. You will lead strategic direction, driveprofitable growth,and elevateunderwriting excellencewithin your assigned business segment. As a role model and champion of our high-performance culture, you will lead and developour Builders Risk and Express Account Underwriting Teams to deliver strong business results and meaningful partnerships across the organization.

Your WORK as the Director of Underwriting will make a difference as you:

  • Develop and execute a segment-specific underwriting strategy that drives profitable growth, optimized risk selection, strong retention, and competitive market positioning.
  • Lead book performance through targeted action plans such as eligibility refinement, pricing adjustments, or product and form recommendations.
  • Evaluate competitive positioning (pricing, coverage, service) and collaborate withProducton enhancement opportunities aligned to market trends and underwriting performance.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and corporate governance standards for the segment.
  • Lead, coach, and develop underwriting leaders and teams, fostering consistent underwriting discipline and a high-performing culture.
  • Guide adoption of innovative solutions developed by the Technical Underwriting Office (TUO) to enhance efficiency and underwriting insight, ensuring practical field integration.
  • Utilize data and analytics to identify portfolio trends, performance drivers, and opportunities to refine underwriting strategies.
  • Represent the segment externally with brokers, agencies, and at industry events to strengthen market relationships and reinforce the organization's strategic positioning.
  • Collaborate closely withSales, Product, and Claimsto ensure alignment between underwriting strategies, market needs, and loss experience.
  • Partner with theTUOto maintain underwriting standards, lead audit initiatives, and champion technical excellence across products and lines.

Travel Requirements

  • At least 25% travel required

Skills andExperienceto get the JOB done RIGHT:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management, Finance, Insurance, or related field with 10+ years of work experience in commercial line underwriting or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience supervising/managing underwriters or leadership teams.
  • Proven track record of achieving book profitability, growth, and retention targets.
  • Ability to think strategically within the marketplace and insurance environment.
  • Deep understanding of risk selection, rating and pricing, product/coverage design, and renewals in commercial P&C.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and presentation skills capable of engaging with brokers, senior executives and cross-functional partners.
