Position Title: Senior Controls Engineer - Building Automation
Position Location: Remote - work virtually from anywhere in the United States
JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Controls Engineer - Building Automation supports DLB's mission critical projects, with a primary focus on building automation systems (BAS), PMS (Power Management System), controls integration, and smart building solutions. This role provides technical and project leadership for the planning, and design of BAS/PMS and integrated control systems.
The Senior Controls Engineer - Building Automation collaborates closely with MEP design engineers, construction contractors, equipment vendors, software engineers, project managers, and client representatives to ensure systems are designed, integrated, and delivered in alignment with project requirements and client expectations.
This position operates with a high degree of independence, receiving general direction on routine work and detailed guidance on new or complex assignments. The engineer may serve as a technical lead on projects of moderate to complex scope and coordinate the work of other engineering and production staff. The role communicates and operates in line with organizational goals, values, and departmental objectives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Engineering Design Activities (80%)
  • Create project deliverables including design drawings, sequences of operations and specifications
  • Develop various engineering drawings in AutoCAD and Revit format including floor plan drawings, system architecture diagrams, point-to-point wiring diagrams and control panel diagrams
  • Lead and participate in building automation focused design reviews
  • Create and modify project specifications
  • Coordinate items with MEP trades that also affect BAS
  • Identify potential project scope changes and aid in development of strategies to minimize impact and control deviations from estimated costs and project deadlines
  • Perform QAQC peer reviews for projects where they are not the lead design engineer
  • Management of project deliverables when they are not the lead design engineer
  • Survey existing building conditions and prepare technical reports of findings
  • Collect data and other information for construction documents

Assist in Construction Activities (10%)
  • Work as part of the engineering team and interact closely with the project management team
  • Review shop drawings and submittals
  • Review and respond to RFIs
  • Review and complete punch lists and project close out documents
  • Perform Onsite BAS Engineering Reviews (5%)
  • Provide onsite BAS engineering audits and feasibility studies
  • Complete BAS engineering surveys for retrofit projects

Administrative (5%)
  • Prepare and oversee development of project progress reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Create / complete departmental reports
  • Accountable for project contract administration
  • Manages personal and site team's hours using company tools

Technology, Digital Tools & AI-Enabled Efficiency
  • Leverage AI-enabled and digital tools to enhance efficiency, reduce manual effort, and support consistent, high-quality work output.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and demonstrate a continuous learning mindset, seeking out new technologies, skills, and methods that elevate individual and team performance.
  • Adapt to emerging technologies and evolving digital workflows, actively supporting the integration and adoption of innovative tools across the organization.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ADVANCED LEVEL FOR ALL THE FOLLOWING)
  • Knowledge of open-source protocols (BACnet, Modbus and SNMP)
  • Knowledge of IoT and smart building solutions
  • Knowledge of typical data center control redundancy strategies
  • Knowledge of materials, methods and the tools involved in the construction mission critical, commercial buildings, or other structures
  • Skilled at using Revit and autoCAD
  • Skilled at using MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams), along with exceptional organizational skills for file management
  • Skilled in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail
  • Ability to leverage AI and emerging technologies to streamline workflows, optimize operational processes, and contribute to company-wide innovation
  • Ability to work successfully in a remote environment thru effective communication and organizational skills, self-motivation, proactiveness and resourcefulness in a distraction free workspace
  • Ability to identify and analyze complex problems, evaluate alternatives and implement effective solutions
  • Ability to follow company and site safety requirements
  • Ability to analyze and prepare documents, reports and correspondence
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form (technical and non-technical information)

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • B.A. / B.S. degree in Engineering, construction or related disciplines
