Shape the architectural future of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) enterprise cloud platform serving millions of Veterans as a Senior Architect. You'll be defining, governing, and evolving the technical architecture of complex cloud-native environments.
Position Description: The Senior Architect supports system and platform architecture by defining architectural standards, governing design decisions, producing comprehensive architecture packages, and ensuring alignment with VA Enterprise Architecture guidelines, security requirements, and mission objectives.
Minimum/General Experience: 5 years of progressive enterprise architecture experience
Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems or related field
Essential Skills/Qualifications:
  • Excellent experience designing and governing architecture for complex enterprise platforms and mission-critical systems in a SAFe environment
  • Excellent experience designing enterprise cloud-native architectures using microservices, containerization, and Kubernetes-based platforms in AWS
  • Excellent experience with modern system architecture practices
  • Excellent experience providing oversight of system design, integration patterns and architectural standards
  • Excellent experience supporting the evaluation and recommendation of architectural approaches supporting scalability, performance, and reliability
  • Excellent experience coordinating architecture reviews for new capabilities, system enhancements, and major platform changes
  • Excellent experience providing oversight of system interoperability, data exchange patterns, and integration with external systems and services
  • Excellent experience supporting the identification and mitigation of architectural risks impacting system performance, scalability, or maintainability
  • Excellent knowledge of event-driven architecture patterns, messaging systems (e.g., Kafka/MSK, Kinesis), and API integration for enterprise scheduling or similar domains
  • Excellent experience with multi-region AWS architecture (e.g., Active/Active, Active/Passive, warm standby patterns, and downtime/failover design)
  • Excellent understanding of Istio service mesh, Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) cluster architecture, cloud design, and cross-cloud connectivity patterns
  • Excellent ability to conduct architecture reviews, govern Infrastructure as Code (IaC) standards, and ensure consistency across platform components developed by multiple teams
  • Above average knowledge of VA Enterprise Architecture standards, Office of Information & Technology (OI&T) technical guidelines, and Federal interoperability requirements
  • Experience maintaining regular communication with Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) and Government technical leadership regarding architectural decisions, system design considerations, and technical roadmap planning
  • Experience supporting federal government programs and enterprise-scale applications operating in cloud-based or hybrid environments
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Tasks/Activities include, but are not limited to:
  • Utilizes SAFe Agile PI Planning and architecture runway concepts
  • Coordinates closely with the Program Manager, Technical Directors, DevSecOps personnel, and Government technical leadership to ensure architectural decisions support mission requirements, platform sustainability, and long-term modernization objectives
  • Develops, maintains, and governs system and platform architecture ensuring alignment with VA Enterprise Architecture guidelines and technical standards
  • Produce high-level design (HLD) and low-level design (LLD) architecture documentation suitable for both executive briefings and engineering implementation
  • Delivers the comprehensive system Architecture Package
  • Supports multi-tenant authorization environments, Authority to Operate (ATO) inheritance frameworks, and security boundary design
  • Leads architectural design of the Scheduling Event Bus including event schema standards, integration patterns, security controls, onboarding framework, and production deployment
  • Ensures high availability and fault tolerance consistent with mission-critical performance requirements
  • Develops the Multi-Region Enablement Plan including deployment patterns, failover strategies, cost modeling, and prioritized implementation roadmap
  • Provides architectural oversight for the Multi-Tenant Platform Evolution Strategy ensuring proper ATO inheritance boundaries, tenant self-service guardrails, and security control allocation
  • Leads architecture reviews for all new capabilities, system enhancements, and major platform changes
  • Ensures architectural consistency across all teams
  • Identifies and mitigates architectural risks impacting performance, scalability, security, or maintainability of the platform
  • Updates the Architecture Package and briefs all architectural changes to the Technical Director and leadership every PI

Compensation & Benefits: The annual projected pay range for this position is $103,644 - $124,490 with consideration being given to various factors including but not limited to qualifications, experience, job responsibilities, and geographic location.
