Job description

Location: Remote (with occasional travel as needed)
Company Overview:
At Shaper Capital, we're on a mission to partner with incredible people to build companies that shape the world. Shaper Capital was founded by Travis May, who led the two biggest data companies created in the last 20 years (LiveRamp and Datavant); we've launched six companies over the past year, creating data businesses that follow similar playbooks across industries.
By joining Shaper today, you'll be part of a small, ambitious team driven by the belief that the world's greatest problems have yet to be solved and the most transformative companies have yet to be built. We empower our portfolio companies to create businesses that transform industries, and we believe in hiring individuals who are smart, nice, and get things done. We invest in hiring high-potential and humble individuals who thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous environments and can rapidly grow their responsibilities as we reimagine company creation.
Role Overview:
Venture Builder-in-Residence (Think: a rotational fellowship for the next generation of founders and operators.)
As a Venture Builder-in-Residence, you'll plug directly into Shaper Capital's portfolio companies to tackle the most urgent, high-impact business priorities. Whether it's helping a founder stand up a new business vertical, scaling critical ops during a period of hypergrowth, exploring new M&A opportunities, or launching a zero-to-one product initiative, you'll be on the front lines of building. This role is designed as a rotational program-when one critical initiative is complete, you'll move to the next.
Over time, you'll have the opportunity to embed permanently within a portfolio company, or even start a Shaper-backed company of your own.
This is a unique opportunity for an exceptional, athletic generalist to accelerate their trajectory by working across multiple early-stage companies, getting direct exposure to top-tier founders, investors, and operators, and learning how great companies are built from the inside.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Embed with Portfolio Companies: Join a Shaper-backed startup for a high-priority tour of duty-owning special projects, stepping in during moments of scale, or helping unlock critical growth levers. You'll be deployed where your impact is most needed.
  • Tackle Ambiguous, High-Leverage Work: Lead projects with unclear ownership and high business value-standing up new products, streamlining operations, building financial models, or testing go-to-market strategies.
  • Cross-Company Exposure: Rotate across multiple portfolio companies to rapidly build pattern recognition and context around what makes early-stage startups succeed (or fail).
  • Pressure Test and Scale Ideas: Work closely with founders and Shaper leadership to pressure test key initiatives, bring structure to chaos, and turn half-baked ideas into shippable outcomes.
  • Explore the Frontier of Company Creation: Contribute to ideation and early diligence for potential new Shaper companies. If a new company idea emerges from your rotation, you may lead its development as a future founder or founding team member.
Key Qualifications:
  • Experience:
    • Ideally, you have experience in a high-impact role at a high-growth, early-stage, technology company or have started a company of your own
  • Skillset:
    • Generalist excellence: You pick things up quickly, execute ruthlessly, and learn even faster.
    • Builder mindset: Your entrepreneurial, love zero-to-one environments, take ownership, and bring scrappy energy to your work.
    • Structured thinker: You break down problems clearly and communicate actionable insights.
    • High agency: You don't wait for permission; you see gaps and fill them.
    • Strong operator: You can manage complex projects across stakeholders and disciplines.
    • Highly adaptable: Thrives in a fast-paced, scrappy environment. Comfortable with ambiguity and able to operate effectively with limited direction.
    • Low ego, high ownership: Willing to dive into the details while maintaining strategic oversight.
    • Passion for data and startups: You're curious about the data economy and eager to work with founders solving novel problems in this space.
    • Culture fit: Alignment with our motto of hiring people who are smart, nice, and get things done. Ability to work effectively in a remote-first, distributed team environment. Collaborative, proactive, and excited to work across multiple teams and industries. High integrity and a strong moral compass.
What We Offer:
  • A rare opportunity to work across a portfolio of cutting-edge, venture-backed startups solving meaningful problems with data.
  • Fast-track career acceleration through high-ownership roles and proximity to exceptional founders and operators.
  • Founding opportunity potential-the chance to incubate your own idea and launch a Shaper company in the future.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits package.
  • A world-class peer group and the chance to join a tight-knit, ambitious, and collaborative team.
How to Apply:
To apply, please submit your resume and a short note about why you're excited about this opportunity. If you've built or contributed to something meaningful (a startup, a project, a product, etc.), we'd love to hear about it.
